Two Shifts and One Person

The bus is at ten to six in the evening and the bell is at ten past three in the afternoon, and between those two things is the whole of it.

She works nights at a distribution center. Ten hour shifts, four on. She gets in at half past six in the morning, and the children are up at seven, and school is at nine, and she does school, and then she sleeps from about half past nine until half past two, which is five hours in daylight with the road outside, and then she gets them at ten past three.

Then she is a mother until seven, and then she sleeps again if the evening allows it, which it does perhaps twice a week, and then the bus at ten to six.

She has not had six unbroken hours since the spring.

Here is the thing she noticed in July and has not been able to unnotice. Nobody has asked. Not once. Not a single person has said, how are you actually managing, in a way that wanted an answer. Her mother asks about the children. Her supervisor asks about the numbers. The school asks about forms. Her friend from before, who she loves, asks about her love life in a way that is meant warmly and lands like a joke about somebody else's schedule.

And she does not blame any of them. That is important. They are not neglecting her; they simply do not have the information, because the whole arrangement is invisible from every direction. From the outside it looks like: she works, and she has two kids, which is a sentence that describes about a third of the country and which conveys none of it.

The specific hour is half past two in the afternoon. Alarm, and the five hours of daylight sleep are over, and she is standing in a kitchen that has the previous evening still in it, with about thirty minutes before she has to leave for the bell, and the tiredness is not the ordinary kind. It is a kind that makes her hands feel far away.

And what arrives in that thirty minutes, most days, is not despair. She is not a despairing person and would tell you so. It is a very flat sentence and it is: nobody knows I am doing this.

Not: nobody helps, though that is also true. Nobody knows. Six months of the hardest thing she has ever done, and it is not in anybody's picture of her life.

You will have your own half past two. The arrangement that is invisible from every direction at once.

Who the strength is actually for

There is a stretch of Isaiah that gets quoted constantly and almost always from the wrong end of it. People quote the eagles. I want the two verses before the eagles, because that is where the people in the passage actually are.

He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.Isaiah 40:29

Look at who is being described. The faint. Him who has no might. Not the willing. Not the ones running low. The ones who have none.

And notice that the giving is not conditional on anything in the passage. There is no clause about deserving it, no instruction to be found first. The sentence is simply a statement about what God does and about who it lands on, and the qualification, if you can call it that, is emptiness.

So take it plainly: you are in the exact category this verse names, and you were in it at half past two this afternoon, and that is what Isaiah 40 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line written to an exhausted people and lays it down in a kitchen with thirty minutes on the clock.

And I want to be honest about what this verse does not say, because a tired woman has been handed enough cheerful nonsense. It does not promise her six unbroken hours. It does not say the arrangement will change, and I am not going to tell her when anything changes. Isaiah does not put a date on it and neither will I.

What it says is that strength is given to people who have none, which is a different claim and a more useful one, because it applies today rather than at some point after the situation improves.

Now her actual sentence, which was that nobody knows. The passage is written to a people who had said, out loud, that their way was hidden from the Lord and their right disregarded by God. That is verse twenty seven. Somebody said exactly her sentence, in the same chapter, and the whole passage is the answer to it.

You have been known through the entire six months, in the arrangement nobody can see from outside, because Isaiah 40 answers that precise complaint by name, and His Spirit is what makes an old argument feel like somebody sitting down opposite you.

Where the load is bigger than one person

I want to stop the article here and be plain, because this site will not admire anybody for holding what one person cannot hold.

Four nights of ten hours plus days with two children on five hours of daylight sleep is beyond what a body sustains, and that is a fact about the arrangement rather than about her. Tell the doctor the true numbers about your sleep, in hours, without softening them. Ask what is available, in those words, and ask about anything a social worker could open up, because families rarely see from inside what is available from outside. Tell one person the real shape of the week, even badly, and let it be awkward.

And if half past two has begun to go somewhere heavier than tiredness, or the thought of not being here has started to feel restful, dial or text 988 in the United States, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and talk to a person tonight.

Saying it out loud costs nothing with God. You are held exactly as much on the week you asked as on the six months you did not, because Scripture never measures our standing by what we absorb, and His Spirit is what makes that true in the body rather than only on the page.

Six months are not a balance

And the guardrail. The six months are not accruing anywhere as credit. There is no account, and nothing about the night shift makes God's regard for her higher than it was in March. A crown in Scripture is placed on a head by somebody else, always, and in the one glimpse we get of people holding one, they take it off and throw it down.

Nobody is ranked. She is not further along than her friend who asks about the wrong things. That comparison is not in this book, and a hidden life scoring itself against a visible one has traded something true for something exhausting.

You have nothing to win in that kitchen and nothing to prove to anybody who never asked, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase.
