Nothing OverlookedRuth 2:12

The Second Shift Nobody Bills For

This message is for A man taking a second shift at the plant so his wife can stay at home with her father, coming in at ten at night and out at six, with nothing in the house to show for the extra hours, needs the invisible hours counted by somebody.

He clocks on at ten and off at six. That is on top of the shift he has always done, which is seven to three, and between three and ten he sleeps in two pieces with something in between that is not really either.

Her father moved in in February. He has a condition that is going to do what it is going to do, and the honest arithmetic was: either she stops working or he goes somewhere, and neither of them could make the second one come out right in their own heads. So she stopped, and the money that she was earning had to come from somewhere, and it comes from the ten to six.

Here is the part nobody sees. It is not the tiredness, which is bad and which he expected. It is that the extra money does not appear anywhere. It goes straight through. It goes into the gap her salary left, and the gap is exactly the size of the money, and so at the end of every month the house looks precisely as it looked in January.

There is nothing to point at. Nobody drives past and says, look, they got that. There is no new anything. Eight hours a night, five nights a week, for seven months, and the total visible output is that a house continues to look the same as it did before.

He said something about this once, badly, at about four in the morning when they crossed in the kitchen, and it came out sideways and sounded like a complaint about her father, which it was not, and it took two days to repair. He has not raised it since and does not intend to.

She sees it. That is worth saying. She is not oblivious and she is not ungrateful, and she says thank you in the way that people who are exhausted say thank you, which is real but is one sentence and then the day starts.

The thing that gets him is around half past four, on the line, when the machine is doing what it does and there is nothing to think about. It goes like this: this is going into a hole. Not the money. The hours. Seven months of his one life, and the way the world would describe the result of those hours is that nothing happened.

You will have your own half past four. The effort whose entire success is that a thing did not get worse.

The blessing spoken over a woman with nothing to show

There is a moment in Ruth that I want to put next to that machine.

Ruth is a foreigner, gleaning in a field, which is the lowest legal form of getting food there was. She has no standing, no claim, and by the standards of the town she is producing nothing. She is picking up what the harvesters dropped. And Boaz, who does not know her, says this.

The Lord repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.Ruth 2:12

I want to be careful with the middle of that, because I am not going to tell you what a full reward is. Boaz does not describe it and neither will I, and anybody who furnishes that silence is selling something.

What I want is the last clause, because it is the one that answers the machine. Under whose wings she has come to take refuge. Boaz has just looked at a woman with nothing whatsoever to show for herself and named where she actually is. Not what she has accumulated. Where she is standing.

And notice why he blesses her. Not for the gleaning, which is nothing, but for what she did for her mother in law, which nobody had asked her to do, which had no contract behind it, and which had produced, at the point where he speaks, an outcome of exactly zero. Two widows in a town with no money.

So take it plainly: you are under something rather than owed something, and you were under it before the first night shift, and that is what Ruth 2 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a blessing spoken at the edge of a barley field and lays it down on a factory line at half past four.

Which turns the hole over. His fear was that the hours vanish because they leave no visible result. But Boaz, looking at a woman whose visible result is a few handfuls of grain, does not assess her by output at all. He names a location and a refuge, and the whole book afterwards agrees with him.

You have been standing somewhere rather than earning something, because the written word puts refuge before result, and His Spirit is what makes that land on a man who has nothing in the house to show for seven months.

Where the load is bigger than one person

I want to stop the article here and be plain, because this site will not admire a household for absorbing what a household cannot absorb.

Two jobs and a dying father in one house is not a sustainable arrangement, and saying that is not a criticism of anybody in it. Ask the doctor directly what support actually exists and use the word respite, because the people who most need it are reliably the last to say it out loud. Ask about a social worker, who can see options a family cannot see from inside. Ask badly rather than not at all.

And if half past four has begun to go somewhere heavier than tiredness, or the thought of not being here has started to feel like rest, dial or text 988 in the United States, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and talk to a person tonight.

Naming a limit is not a failure of love for anybody in that house. You are held exactly as much on the night you say it out loud as on the night you carry it silently, because Scripture never measures our standing by what we can absorb, and His Spirit is what makes that true in the body rather than only in the head.

Seven months are not a balance

And the guardrail, because a man on a line at four in the morning will make this a transaction without noticing.

The seven months are not accruing anywhere. There is no account. A crown in Scripture is placed on a head by somebody else, always, and in the one glimpse we get of people holding one, they take it off and throw it down in front of the throne.

Nobody is ranked either. He is not further along than his wife, who is doing the days. That measurement is not in this book, and the second one half of a marriage starts scoring against the other half, something true has been swapped for something corrosive.

You have nothing to win on that line and nothing to prove in that kitchen, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what turns that from a doctrine into ground.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.

Right now, as you read this, you are under wings rather than out on your own, including through seven months whose whole visible output is that a house looks the same. Scripture blesses a woman with nothing to show and names her location instead of her total, and His Spirit is laying that over a factory line while you read it.

And you have nothing to accumulate and nothing to recover, because the crown in this book is always placed and never earned, and the people who hold one are last seen throwing it down. Nobody is keeping a total of your nights, and there does not need to be one.

So the seven months can stop being hours into a hole, and go back to being what they are, which is a man keeping a household standing while his wife holds her father's hand.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Second shift nobody bills for, you are not eight hours poured down a drain. Ruth 2 blesses a woman with nothing to show and names the wings she has come under rather than the total she has built. Every hour worked in you is held.
  2. Voice on the line at half past four, you have no access to what those months did. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, which puts refuge before result and never asks a life to produce a photograph. What I did stands, in a house that looks the same.
  3. Father, You were on that line every night and You have not mislaid one of those hours. Ruth 2:12 says I have come to take refuge under Your wings, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. There is nothing for me to earn and nothing for me to win, so I am handing You the whole seven months and going to sleep.
