He RemembersIsaiah 44:21

A Year After I Leave

This message is for A man who has understood, watching somebody clear a colleague's desk, that a year after he goes there will be nobody in the building who can say what he actually did there, needs to be remembered when there is nobody left to remember.

They cleared Bernard's desk on a Wednesday and it took about forty minutes.

He watched, not deliberately, from about thirty feet away, in the way you watch something happening in an open office. Two people, a box, some things into the recycling, a laptop back to the IT desk. Bernard had been there nineteen years and was, by any reasonable measure, one of the reasons the place worked.

Six weeks later somebody new was at that desk, and it was fine, and everybody liked her, and by about March you could not have told anything had changed.

And in April somebody in a meeting described a decision that Bernard had made, and got it slightly wrong, and there was nobody in that room who knew it was wrong except him, and he did not correct it because correcting it would have taken four minutes and helped nobody.

That was the afternoon.

He is fifty five and has been there twenty two years and he sat at his own desk after that meeting and did the arithmetic, and the arithmetic is: a year after he goes, there will be nobody in that building who can say what he actually did.

Not that he did nothing. The building would be different without the twenty two years, in ways that are real and diffuse and impossible to point at. But the specific things, the eleven decisions that mattered, the thing in 2014 that nobody has ever known about, the person he kept from being fired in a conversation nobody else was in: those go when he goes, because he is the only person who holds them in that form.

And he does not want a plaque. He wants to be clear about that with himself and mostly is. What he wants is more like an assurance that it was not a performance in an empty theater, and there is no institution in the world that can give him that, and he has understood in April that he has been quietly asking one to for about two decades.

You will have your own April. The moment you work out that the place you gave it to cannot hold it and was never able to.

The sentence God attaches to a name

There is a line in Isaiah that comes at the end of a stretch about idols, which matters, because the contrast is the argument.

Remember these things, O Jacob, and Israel, for you are my servant; I formed you; you are my servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me.Isaiah 44:21

You will not be forgotten by me. And the emphasis is on the last two words. Not: you will be remembered. Not: your deeds will stand. By me. The sentence locates the remembering in a person rather than in a record.

And look at what surrounds it. Isaiah has just spent twenty verses on people who make things that cannot hold anything: a man cuts a tree, burns half of it to cook his dinner, and carves the other half into something he then asks to save him. The whole passage is about the difference between something you construct and something that is alive.

Which is exactly the distinction he needs in April. An institution is a made thing. It is a good and useful made thing, and it employs people and does work in the world, and it cannot hold a life, because holding a life is not a function that a structure has. Asking it to is not foolish; it is the commonest thing a serious person does with their working years. It is simply a category error, and it goes unnoticed for two decades because the building keeps standing.

So take it plainly: you are remembered by somebody rather than kept by something, and that is what Isaiah 44 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an argument about carpentry and lays it down at a desk in April.

And notice the verb before the promise. I formed you. The one doing the remembering is the one who made him, which is the whole force of it: a maker does not lose track of what he made, and no filing system anywhere is in that relationship with anybody.

You have been held by the one who formed you rather than by the place you gave it to, because the written word puts the remembering in a person and contrasts it with everything constructed, and His Spirit is what makes that reach a man doing arithmetic at his own desk.

And there is a further thing in that verse that is worth the eleven decisions. Isaiah 44 has God call him a servant twice in one sentence, which is a word about relationship rather than about output. A servant is not evaluated by whether the household later recalls what he did; he is somebody's, and the somebody is standing right there in the verse using the word. That is a different footing from anything an appraisal ever gave him. You have been somebody's rather than something's for twenty two years, and Scripture is what makes the distinction rather than my consoling anybody, and His Spirit is the one who turns a change of footing into something a man can feel under him.

What he is not being told

Now the guardrail.

Nobody is telling him to write it down, or to make sure somebody knows about 2014, or to have a conversation before he goes so that the record is straight. If he wants to do any of that he may, and none of it is what he actually came for.

And nobody is telling him that somebody will find out, or that the truth will emerge, or that the building will realize what it had. I do not know any of that, Scripture does not say it, and predicting it would be furnishing a silence.

And twenty two years is not a wasted life because the building cannot hold it. That sentence is important. A life is not made worthless by being unrecorded, and this site will never make a man's years depend on an institution's memory.

You are held by a regard that has nothing to do with what a building can say about you, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase. You have nothing to secure before you go, and Scripture is what settles that, and His Spirit is what stops one afternoon in April from becoming a project.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.

Right now, as you read this, you are not forgotten by the one who formed you, whatever a building will be able to say about you in eighteen months. Scripture puts the remembering in a person and spends twenty verses first on the difference between that and anything a person builds, and His Spirit is laying that over twenty two years while you read.

And you have nothing to secure and nothing to correct, because the crown in this book is placed on a head by somebody else and no institution hands one out. God's regard for you is not the total of what your workplace can reconstruct, and there is no total.

So the desk can be cleared in forty minutes, and somebody can get a decision slightly wrong in a meeting, and none of it is the record.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Desk that will have somebody else at it, you are not the record of me. Isaiah 44 says you will not be forgotten by me, and it puts the remembering in a person rather than in anything anybody built. You were a made thing and you were never going to be able to hold a life.
  2. Arithmetic I did in April, you were a category error and not a discovery. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, which spends twenty verses on the difference between what is constructed and what is alive. I was asking a building for something buildings do not do.
  3. Father, You formed me and You were in the conversation in 2014 that nobody has ever known about. Isaiah 44:21 says I will not be forgotten by You, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. There is nothing here for me to secure, so I am handing You the whole twenty two years and going home.
