Back to the Place That Never Noticed

This message is for A woman badging in tomorrow at a place that has not once in six years noticed a single thing she did beyond the minimum it pays for, needs to walk back into an unseen life carrying something.

Badge at the panel, green light, push with the shoulder because the door has been heavy since they changed the closer.

Six years.

Here is what the six years contain, as a partial list. The way she handles a particular kind of difficult customer, which she worked out in year two and which has been quietly copied by four other people who do not know they are copying it. The reorganization of a cupboard that saves everybody eleven minutes a day and which she did on a Saturday. The thing she noticed in the numbers in the second year that would have cost a great deal if it had gone on, which she mentioned to a supervisor who has since left and who took it upstairs as their own and was thanked.

She is not angry about that last one. She was angry for about two weeks and then found she genuinely was not, and has checked since, and she is not.

And here is what the six years contain from the building's side. She is reliable. That is the word. It has appeared in every one of her six reviews and it is the highest word this place has for a person like her, and it is not an insult and it is not enough.

She is forty. She does not want a promotion; she has watched what those do to people here. She does not want a plaque. She has thought carefully about what she wants and the honest answer is that she does not want anything from the building, which she reached about a year ago and which was a genuinely good day.

But she still badges in at seven, and the door is still heavy, and there is a specific moment at the panel, waiting for the green, that has not been solved by not wanting anything.

You will have your own panel. The daily entry into a place that will never notice, that you have stopped wanting anything from, and that still has that moment in it.

The sentence, and the day it was said on

There is a line everybody knows, and almost nobody knows what was happening when it was said, and the occasion changes it completely.

The people have come back from exile. The law is read out loud for the first time in a very long time, all morning, and the whole assembly starts weeping, because they are hearing how far off they have been.

And Nehemiah stops them.

Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.Nehemiah 8:10

The line is said to people in tears, on a day of no achievement whatsoever, in a city that is still half rubble. Nothing has been accomplished. Nobody is being congratulated.

So take it plainly: you are being handed something on a day with nothing in it, and that is what Nehemiah 8 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an instruction shouted over a weeping crowd and lays it down at a badge panel at seven in the morning.

And the phrase itself is worth slowing on, because it is not what people usually take it for. The joy of the Lord. Most people read that as your joy in the Lord, which is a good thing and is not what it says. It is His joy. His, as a possession, being named as the source of somebody else's strength.

Which is why it can be handed to people who are crying. If it were their own joy it would be unavailable that morning, because they had none. It is not theirs. It comes from somewhere with its own supply.

You have been handed a strength that does not come from your own supply, because the written word puts the joy on God's side of the sentence, and His Spirit is what makes that reach a woman waiting for a green light.

And notice what it is called. Strength. Not comfort, not encouragement. The thing being offered is load bearing, which is the specific category she needs, because she is not sad and does not need consoling. She needs something to walk through a heavy door with.

You have been given something to carry rather than something to feel, and Scripture is what makes it strength rather than sentiment, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a difference a person notices at a panel.

What this article will not say

Now the guardrail, and this site owes it to her at the end.

Nobody is going to tell her the building will notice. It will not. Six years of evidence say so and I am not going to argue with her evidence from a distance.

And nobody is going to tell her that the six years are producing something in her. They are not a refining process. The word reliable is not a curriculum.

And nobody is going to use tomorrow to make the moment at the panel smaller. It is the size it is, and she has already done the hard work of not wanting anything from the place, and that was hers and it was well done.

And the six years are not accruing anywhere. There is no account. The crown in this book is placed on a head by somebody else and then thrown down, and nobody in that room has been paid for a cupboard reorganized on a Saturday.

You are held by a regard that has nothing to do with what appears in a review, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase. You have nothing ahead of you to earn, and Scripture is what settles that, and His Spirit is what keeps a badge panel from becoming an installment.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, in whatever room you are sitting in tonight.

Right now, as you read this, you are being handed a strength that is not from your own supply, whatever the building has noticed in six years. Scripture says the joy of the Lord is your strength, and says it to people weeping in a half rebuilt city on a day of no achievement, and His Spirit is laying that over a badge panel while you read.

And you have nothing ahead to earn and nothing to be noticed for, because the crown in this book is placed on a head by somebody else and there is no described prize anywhere in it. What is ahead of you is Him, which is what the word actually puts there, and it is not smaller than a picture would have been.

So tomorrow the door can be heavy, and the light can go green, and you can go through it already carrying something.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Badge I scan at seven, you are not the door to a wasted day. Nehemiah 8 says the joy of the Lord is your strength, and it was said to people weeping in a half rebuilt city on a day when nothing had been achieved. It was never my own supply.
  2. Moment at the panel, you were not solved by my not wanting anything. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, which hands out strength rather than consolation, because I am not sad and I do not need consoling. I need something to walk through a heavy door with.
  3. Father, You are through that door already, ahead of me, before the light goes green, and the joy is Yours and not mine. Nehemiah 8:10 calls it strength and hands it to people with nothing, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. What is ahead of me is You, so I am handing You tomorrow and going to sleep.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
