She Learned It at My Table

This message is for An aunt listening to a niece thanked publicly for a kindness the aunt spent nine years teaching her at a kitchen table nobody photographed, needs to be released from measuring her life against a visible one.

The thing the niece is being thanked for is a way of handling somebody who is difficult in a very particular manner: staying in the room, not conceding the point, not raising the temperature, and going back the next day as though nothing had happened.

That is not a personality trait. It is a practice, and it is learnable, and it took nine years to teach.

The teaching happened at a kitchen table, in pieces, mostly on Saturday mornings between the ages of about eleven and twenty. Never once as a lesson. It was: what do you think she meant by that, and, well, what would happen if you did, and, no, wait, sit down, and, all right, but say it to me first and let us hear how it sounds.

Hundreds of hours. And nine years, which is the actual unit, because the thing being taught cannot be transmitted in an afternoon; it has to be watched being done, over and over, on ordinary Tuesdays, by somebody who does it badly some weeks and says so.

The niece is twenty six and is very good at it now, better than her aunt in some situations, and there is a specific instance she handled last spring that her aunt has thought about with real admiration.

At a family thing in July, an older cousin said out loud how remarkable it is that she is like that, and where does that even come from, and somebody said, oh, she has always been like that, and everybody agreed, and the conversation moved on inside about eleven seconds.

Her aunt was standing about six feet away with a plate.

And she was proud. That is genuinely the first and largest thing and it lasted for about a day and it was real. And under it, arriving later, at home, was something with no name and no acceptable expression, which is roughly: nine years happened and the room said she has always been like that.

She would not want to be credited. She has examined that carefully and it holds. The trouble is not that she wants the sentence said. The trouble is that the room's version, she has always been like that, is not merely incomplete, it is the opposite of what happened, and there is nowhere to put a correction that would not be graceless.

You will have your own six feet away with a plate. The moment somebody's version of a thing quietly deletes nine years, and there is no version of saying so that is not worse.

What Hannah sings about weighing

There is a song in Samuel sung by a woman who had spent years being misread, and there is a line in it about measurement that is stranger than it looks.

Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.1 Samuel 2:3

By him actions are weighed. Weighed, which means put on a balance, which means assessed for what they actually amount to rather than for how they appear.

And the first half of the verse tells us who the line is aimed at. Talk no more so very proudly. It is spoken against people who are running their mouths about their own standing, which is exactly the arrangement Hannah had suffered under for years while nobody knew what she was actually carrying.

So Hannah is not asking for a correction to the public record. She is naming a second set of scales that has been operating the entire time and that never depended on anybody in her town having the facts.

So take it plainly: you are weighed on a balance the room does not operate, and that is what 1 Samuel 2 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a woman's song at a shrine and lays it down in a kitchen where somebody is holding a plate.

And notice the verb again, because it is doing precise work. Actions are weighed, not observed and not recorded. Weighing produces a value. It is an assessment of what a thing actually amounts to, which is a different operation from noticing that it happened, and it is available for actions that nobody noticed at all.

Nine years of Saturday mornings has a weight. Not a record; a weight. You have been putting real mass on a balance that has been running the whole time, because the written word says actions are weighed by God rather than merely seen by Him, and His Spirit is what makes that land on somebody who has nowhere acceptable to put a correction.

The niece has taken nothing

Now the guardrail, and it matters here more than usual because the person in question is loved.

The niece did not take anything, and she genuinely does not know. That is not carelessness on her part, it is the ordinary condition of anybody who was formed young: nobody remembers being taught the things they learned before they knew they were things. She could not credit her aunt if she wanted to, because from inside it does feel like having always been like that.

You have been teaching something whose success is that it stopped having a history, and Scripture is what keeps that from being a consolation prize, because 1 Samuel 2 puts the weighing with God rather than with the people who can see the result, and His Spirit is the one who makes an odd kind of success feel like one.

And her aunt is not the more faithful of the two. That sentence is not available here. Nine years of teaching does not outrank being the one who now does it, and the whole point of teaching something is that it stops being yours.

If this article leaves anybody quietly pleased to be the unacknowledged source, then something has gone wrong, because unacknowledged source has become a title, and the room would have been right to move on in eleven seconds.

So: you have nothing to win at that table and nothing that anybody took, because a crown in Scripture is placed on a head and never earned, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase. You are held by a regard that did not move when the cousin spoke, and the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what keeps that from thinning out on the drive home.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.

Right now, as you read this, you are weighed rather than described, whatever a room concluded in eleven seconds. Scripture says the Lord is a God of knowledge and that by Him actions are weighed, and it says it through a woman who had been misread for years, and His Spirit is laying that over nine years of Saturday mornings while you read.

And you have nothing to win and nothing that was taken, because the crown in this book is always placed and never earned, and the people holding one are last seen throwing it down. There is no order with you and your niece in it. His Spirit is not keeping one.

So the eleven seconds can stop being a deletion, and the nine years can go back to being what they were, which is a girl at a kitchen table learning something on Saturdays.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Nine years at my kitchen table, you are not a thing that quietly went to somebody else. 1 Samuel 2 says the Lord is a God of knowledge and that by Him actions are weighed, and weighing is not the same as being noticed. Every Saturday morning has a weight on that balance.
  2. Room that said she has always been so, you are not the record. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, where a second set of scales has been running the whole time and never needed the room to have the facts. Nothing of mine was deleted in eleven seconds.
  3. Father, You were at that table every Saturday for nine years and You have not mislaid one of those mornings. 1 Samuel 2:3 says actions are weighed by You, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. I am not the unacknowledged source and I do not want to be, so I am handing You the whole nine years and being proud of her out loud.
