Eleven Years of the Same Prayer

This message is for A man who has stood in the same doorway and said the same forty words over a sleeping child every night for eleven years, and has never once been heard doing it, needs the invisible hours counted by somebody.

The door is never fully closed. There is a gap of about four inches, which was established when the boy was two and afraid of the dark and which nobody has ever formally revisited.

He stands in the gap. Not in the room. He worked out early that going in wakes him, and standing in the doorway does not.

Forty words. He has never written them down and he could not tell you when they settled into their final form, somewhere around the second year, and they have not changed since. They name the boy. They ask three things. They finish with a sentence that is not a request and is closer to a statement, and it is the part he means most and the part he would find hardest to say to another human being.

Eleven years. The boy is fourteen now and the door gap is still four inches, for reasons neither of them examine.

Some nights it takes eleven seconds. Some nights he stands there for two or three minutes afterwards. Once, in a bad year, he said it and then had to hold the door frame.

Nobody has ever heard it. Not the boy, who has slept through every one, and not his wife, who goes up later. He has never mentioned it to a friend, a pastor, or anyone at all. Not from secrecy exactly. It is that the words are worn so smooth now that saying them in daylight, to a person, would be like handing someone a stone out of a river and expecting them to feel the water.

And there is a specific problem that has arrived in the last year or so, which is new, and which is the reason this is worth writing about.

The boy is fourteen. Some of the things the forty words ask for have not happened. Not tragically. Just: not. And a couple of them look, at fourteen, less likely rather than more, and he is a realistic man and he has noticed.

So the thing that comes now, standing in a four inch gap at half past ten at night, is not doubt about whether God exists. It is much more specific and it is worse. It goes: four thousand times, and what has moved.

You will have your own doorway. The thing you have said or done so many times that the repetition has begun to feel like evidence against it.

The word an angel used for a man's prayers

There is a moment in Acts that answers this more precisely than anything else I know, and the precision is in one noun.

Cornelius is a Roman officer. He is not yet a Christian. He prays, and he gives, and he has been doing both for some time with no visible result whatsoever, and then an angel is standing in his room.

And he stared at him in terror and said, "What is it, Lord?" And he said to him, "Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God."Acts 10:4

A memorial. That is a word from the sacrificial system, and it means a specific thing: the portion of an offering that was burned so that its smoke went up, the part that stood for the whole. A memorial is a permanent marker of something that happened.

Which is the opposite of how the man in the doorway is thinking about his four thousand nights. He is thinking of them as attempts, and attempts either work or they do not, and four thousand attempts with several unmoved outcomes reads as a failure rate.

The angel is not describing attempts. He is describing something that ascended and is standing before God as a marker. Not a request being processed. A memorial, already there.

So take it plainly: you are looking at a memorial rather than at a failure rate, and that is what Acts 10 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an angel's sentence to a Roman soldier and lays it down in a four inch gap at half past ten.

And notice the plural, and notice that it is not sorted. Your prayers and your alms. Years of them, and the angel does not separate the answered ones from the unanswered ones, or the fervent ones from the eleven second ones. The whole accumulation went up together and is spoken of as one thing.

Which means the four thousand are not four thousand separate scored items. They are one memorial, and it is standing.

You have been building a marker rather than running a success rate, because the written word calls a man's years of prayer a memorial before God, and His Spirit is what makes that land on a father who has started doing arithmetic in a doorway.

Where the load is bigger than one person

I want to stop and be plain, because this site will not admire anybody for carrying alone what should not be carried alone.

Eleven years of nightly prayer for a child, with several of the things unmoved, is a real weight, and holding it entirely silently for eleven years is a lot to ask of one man. Tell one person. A friend, or a pastor, or the doctor if the worry has settled into your body. Say the true sentence rather than the tidy one. If what the forty words ask about is a real difficulty in a child's life, ask the doctor or a counselor what actually helps, in those words, rather than waiting.

And if half past ten has begun to go somewhere heavier than worry, or the thought of not being here has started to feel restful, dial or text 988 in the United States, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and talk to a person tonight.

Saying it out loud costs nothing with God. You are held exactly as much on the night you tell somebody as on the four thousand you did not, because Scripture never measures our standing by what we hold silently, and His Spirit is what makes that true in the body rather than only in principle.

Four thousand are not a score

And the guardrail, because a man doing arithmetic in a doorway will make this a transaction without noticing.

The four thousand nights are not accruing anywhere as credit. There is no account, and nothing about eleven years obliges God to anything. Cornelius did not buy the angel; that is the whole force of the story, since he was outside the covenant and had no standing at all.

A crown in Scripture is placed on a head by somebody else, every time, and in the one glimpse we get of people holding one, they take it off and throw it down.

And I will not tell you what will come of your doorway, because Scripture does not, and anybody who does is furnishing a silence. What the word says is that the prayers went up and are standing as a memorial, which is a great deal more solid than a prediction. You have nothing to earn in that gap and nothing to win, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.

Right now, as you read this, you are standing in front of a memorial, built out of eleven years of forty words nobody has ever heard. Scripture says the prayers ascended as a memorial before God, unsorted, all of them together, and His Spirit is laying that over a four inch gap while you read.

And you have nothing to score and nothing to win, because the crown in this book is always placed and never earned, and the people holding one are last seen throwing it down. Nobody is running a success rate on your nights, and there is no rate being run.

So eleven years can stop being a failure count, and go back to being what it is, which is a father in a doorway saying his son's name.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Doorway at the top of the stairs, you are not eleven years of talking to a hinge. Acts 10 says a man's prayers ascended as a memorial before God, unsorted and all together, and mine went up out of you every night. Every one of those hours is standing.
  2. Arithmetic at half past ten, you are counting attempts and these were never attempts. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, which calls the whole accumulation one memorial rather than four thousand scored items. What I said is up and it is standing.
  3. Father, You were in that gap every night for eleven years and You have not mislaid one of them. Acts 10:4 says the prayers went up as a memorial before You, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. I am not owed an outcome and I am not asking for one, so I am handing You my son and going to bed.
