He leaves at eight. There is a gas station about forty minutes along that he stops at, always, and he has never once needed to, and he stops because eighty minutes of driving without a break is a slightly different thing from forty and forty.
His uncle is in a place about ninety minutes north. He is eighty six. He is not, in the medical sense, dying, and he is not going home either, and he has been in that state for two and a half years, which is a state a lot of people are in and which has no name.
Most Sundays, the uncle sleeps. Not all of the visit. He wakes for a stretch in the middle, twenty minutes or so, and there is a conversation, and the conversation is usually about a boat that was sold in 1971. Then he goes again, and his nephew sits for another half hour, and then drives ninety minutes home.
Nobody in the family knows he does this. That is the fact that makes it worth writing about. Not one person. He has three brothers and a cousin who is very good about phone calls and none of them are aware that the Sundays exist.
He did not set out to keep it secret. What happened was that he went one Sunday, and then again, and then it became a thing he did, and by the time it was a thing there was no moment at which mentioning it would not have sounded like an announcement. So he did not, and now it is two and a half years, and mentioning it would be considerably worse than it would have been at the start.
His wife knows he is out on Sundays. She thinks it is fishing. He has never said it is fishing. He has simply never corrected the assumption, which he is aware is not the same as honesty and which he has decided he can live with and does not entirely like.
Three hours in the car, one hour in a chair, fifty two times a year.
The thing arrives on the road home, usually around the gas station he does not need. It is not about his uncle, who is fine and who is glad to see him and who says so, when he is awake. It is a question about the shape of the whole thing. It goes: is a thing that nobody knows about actually part of my life, or is it something that happens beside it. Two and a half years, and if you asked anybody who knows him to describe his week, the Sundays would not appear.
You will have your own gas station. The part of your life that would not appear in anybody's description of it.
Six words at the end of a psalm
There is a psalm that runs a long way through trouble and then stops on a sentence so small that people read past it.
As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!Psalm 40:17
The Lord takes thought for me. Hold onto that verb, because it is doing something unusual.
It does not say the Lord helps me, although the next line does. It does not say the Lord watches me. It says He takes thought, which is what a person does when somebody is on their mind and they are considering them, working out what they need, running them over.
That is a description of attention with an interior. It is what you do about somebody you love when they are not in the room.
So take it plainly: you are on somebody's mind on the road between two places, and that is what Psalm 40 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes six words from the end of an old psalm and puts them in a car at a gas station on a Sunday evening.
And notice the position of the sentence. It comes after the man has described a pit and a bog and enemies and a long wait. It is not an opening flourish. It is what he lands on at the end, which means it is offered as the thing that holds when the rest has been said.
Now his actual question, which was whether an unwitnessed part of a life is part of the life. That question assumes that a life is the thing other people could describe. And this psalm quietly refuses that assumption, because the man writing it is describing his own interior situation and calling it the truth about himself, while noting that he is poor and needy, which is not how anybody's biography opens.
The Sundays are not beside his life. They are in it. They are simply not in the version of it that other people hold, and the version other people hold was never the authoritative one.
You have been living the whole of it, including the parts nobody could summarize, because Scripture describes God taking thought for a person rather than reading their public record, and His Spirit is what makes that land on a man ninety minutes from home.
Where the load is bigger than one person
I want to stop and be plain about something, because this site will not admire anybody for carrying something quietly that other hands could share.
Three brothers do not know about the Sundays. That is not a moral failing on his part and it is not one on theirs, but it is a fact with consequences, and the main consequence is that a job that could be four people is one person. Tell them. Not as an announcement and not as a reproach. Just tell them, badly, in one plain sentence, and let it be awkward for a week.
And if a load anywhere in your life has grown past what one person can hold, ask the doctor plainly what support exists, and ask about respite, which people who need it are the last to request. If the drive home has begun to go somewhere heavier than tiredness, or the thought of not being here has started to feel restful, dial or text 988 in the United States, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and talk to a person tonight.
Saying it out loud costs nothing with God. You are held exactly as much on the Sunday somebody else drives as on the hundred you drove alone, because Scripture never measures our standing by what we shoulder, and His Spirit is what makes that true in the body rather than only in the head.
Two and a half years are not a total
And the guardrail, quickly, because a man alone in a car will turn this into arithmetic.
The Sundays are not accruing anywhere. There is no account. A crown in Scripture is placed on a head by somebody else, every time, and in the one glimpse we get of people holding one, they take it off and throw it down.
Nobody is ranked. He is not further along than the cousin who is very good about phone calls. That measurement does not exist in this book, and the moment a hidden faithfulness starts scoring itself against a visible one, something true has been swapped for something exhausting.
You have nothing to win on that road and nothing to prove to three brothers, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what turns that from a doctrine into ground.
So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.
Right now, as you read this, you are being thought about, including on the road home from a place nobody in your family knows you go. Scripture says the Lord takes thought for me and puts it at the end of a long psalm as the thing that holds, and His Spirit is laying that over three hours of driving while you read.
And you have nothing to prove to anybody and nothing to accumulate, because the crown in this book is always placed and never earned, and the people holding one are last seen throwing it down. Nobody is keeping a total of your Sundays, and there does not need to be one.
So two and a half years can stop being something beside your life and go back to being what it is, which is a man in a chair with his uncle, talking about a boat.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.
- Road out and road back, you are not three hours thrown into a Sunday. Psalm 40 says the Lord takes thought for me, which is what a person does about somebody they love who is not in the room. Every mile driven in you is held.
- Voice at the gas station, you are working from the wrong description of my life. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, where a man calls his own hidden situation the truth about himself and is agreed with. The Sundays are in my life and not beside it.
- Father, You were at that gas station and in that chair and You have not mislaid one of those Sundays. Psalm 40:17 says You take thought for me, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. There is nothing for me to prove to my brothers, so I am handing You the whole two and a half years and telling them this week.
