Her Story, Everywhere

This message is for A woman scrolling at midnight past another woman's testimony being shared by half the people she knows, holding a decade of her own that nobody has ever asked about, needs to be released from measuring her life against a visible one.

Half past eleven at night, and the phone is doing what the phone does at half past eleven at night.

It is the fourth time it has come up. Different people, same clip. A woman she has met twice, telling about eighteen months of something very hard and how it turned, and she tells it well, and she is not exaggerating, and every word of it is true.

She watches all four minutes again, which is the third time, and she is glad, and she is going to say so in the morning and will mean it.

She has ten years.

Not eighteen months. Ten. And not a turn, which is the other part. Some of it is better and some of it is exactly where it was, and there is no clip in it anywhere, because a clip requires a shape and hers does not have one. It has a Tuesday in 2019 that nobody would understand the significance of without forty minutes of background.

Nobody has asked. She wants to be precise about this because it is easy to make it sound worse than it is. People have asked how she is, and she has said fine, and that was the honest thing to say in a hallway. What has never happened is somebody sitting down and saying, tell me about the ten years.

And she would not know how to answer if they did. That is the honest part. She has never assembled it. It has no shape even to her.

So at half past eleven what arrives is not resentment of the woman in the clip, who she likes and who deserves every share. It is more like a suspicion about herself, and it goes: maybe the reason nothing of mine travels is that there is nothing in mine. Maybe ten years without a shape is just ten years. Maybe the reason nobody asks is that there is no there there.

You will have your own half past eleven. The moment somebody else's story is everywhere and yours seems, briefly, not to be a story at all.

The shortest instruction in the New Testament

There is a line in Romans that is four words long in English and that people quote constantly and mostly at funerals, and the first half of it is the harder half.

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.Romans 12:15

Everybody finds the second half difficult in practice and easy in principle. Sitting with somebody in grief is hard work, but nobody has to be persuaded that it is right.

The first half is the one that requires something. Rejoicing with somebody whose thing arrived when yours did not is a genuinely different operation, and Paul writes it as an instruction rather than as a feeling, which is a mercy, because it means she does not have to manufacture an emotion at half past eleven. She has to do a thing.

And notice what he does not say. He does not say compare your situation with theirs and conclude that yours is also fine. He does not say be glad because your turn is coming, and I am not going to tell you that either, because Scripture does not and I will not furnish that silence.

He says join in with theirs. That is all. Go and stand in somebody else's gladness, which is a place you are allowed to stand without a ticket.

And there is a real freedom hidden in the smallness of that. It does not ask her to feel settled about her own decade first, which is what most advice quietly requires and which is why most advice is useless at half past eleven. It asks for one action, tonight, that she is fully capable of, from exactly where she is sitting. You have been handed something you can actually do rather than something you have to become, and the written word is what keeps that from being a low bar dressed up as grace, and His Spirit is the one who makes a small obedience land bigger than it looks.

So take it plainly: you are welcome inside a joy that is not yours, and that is what Romans 12 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a one line instruction and lays it down on a phone screen at half past eleven at night.

But now the harder thing, the suspicion about herself, because that is the actual wound and it is not addressed by being generous.

The suspicion was that a story with no shape is not a story. Look at what Scripture is mostly made of. Long stretches with nothing in them. Thirteen years between two verses of Genesis. Four hundred years in a single sentence. The Bible is extremely relaxed about periods that do not resolve, and it never treats the unshaped years as a gap in the record. They are the record.

You have been living something with no clip in it, and Scripture is full of exactly that, because the written word gives whole decades a line and does not apologize for them, and His Spirit is what makes that land on somebody who has never assembled her own ten years.

Nobody here is ahead

Now the guardrail.

The woman in the clip is not the problem. Eighteen months of something very hard is eighteen months of something very hard, and it turning does not make it less. She told it well and she told it truthfully and the sharing is doing good for people neither of them will meet.

And the woman at half past eleven is not the more faithful of the two. That sentence is not available here. Ten years does not outrank eighteen months, and unresolved is not a higher grade than resolved, and a decade without a shape is not a superior kind of testimony.

If this article leaves anybody quietly satisfied that hers is the deeper story, then it has gone wrong, because that is the same measuring, dressed as humility.

So: you have nothing to win at half past eleven and nothing that anybody took, because a crown in Scripture is placed on a head and never earned, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase. You are held by a regard that did not move on the fourth share, and the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what keeps it from thinning out by morning.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.

Right now, as you read this, you are living something the record keeps, whether or not it ever acquires four minutes and a shape. Scripture spends whole decades in a sentence and never treats them as a gap, and His Spirit is laying that over ten years while you read.

And you have nothing to win and nothing that was taken, because the crown in this book is always placed and never earned, and the people holding one are last seen throwing it down. There is no order with you and her in it. His Spirit is not keeping one.

So half past eleven can stop being an audit of your own life, and go back to being what it is, which is a woman watching something good travel and being glad.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Ten years nobody has asked about, you are not a story that failed to travel. Romans 12 tells me to rejoice with those who rejoice, and it never once tells me to check my own account first. Nothing of mine went anywhere on the fourth share.
  2. Suspicion that unshaped means empty, you have not read the book you are quoting. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, which puts four hundred years in one sentence and calls it the record. My decade is not a gap in anything.
  3. Father, You were in the Tuesday in 2019 that nobody would understand and You have not mislaid one of these ten years. Romans 12:15 sends me into somebody else's gladness rather than back to my own ledger, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. Mine is not the deeper story and I do not need it to be, so I am handing You the whole decade and putting the phone down.
