He RemembersIsaiah 49:15

Nobody to Hold the Story

This message is for A woman with no children, holding a box of photographs of people whose names she is the only living person who knows, needs to be remembered when there is nobody left to remember.

The box is a shoe box and it has been a shoe box for about thirty years and there is no reason to change it now.

Eleven of the photographs have names on the back in her mother's handwriting. Most do not. And of the ones that do not, she can name perhaps forty, and there is one, of two young men on a wall with their sleeves rolled up, where she knows both of them, and knows what happened to one of them, and is entirely certain that no other living person does.

She is seventy one. She has no children. She has a nephew she is fond of who lives a long way away and who has, as far as she can tell, no interest in this box and no reason to have any.

She has thought about writing on the backs. She bought a pen for it. The pen is in the drawer.

What stopped her is a thing she has not said to anybody and which she thinks might sound self pitying, which is: write the names on the back for whom.

The nephew will keep the box for a while out of decency, and then at some point it will be a box in a house that somebody is clearing, and forty names in an old woman's handwriting on the backs of photographs of strangers is not a rescue. It is a slightly sadder version of the same thing.

That is where she has got stuck, and it is not really about the box.

Because if she is honest, and she has been honest with herself about this twice, at night, the box is a rehearsal. The actual question is about her. When she goes, the last person who can say what her own life consisted of goes with her. Not the facts. Somebody could reconstruct the facts. The knowing, which is a different thing, and which is what a person means when they say a life.

You will have your own shoe box. The thing you are the last one who knows, and the question underneath it about yourself.

The comparison God is willing to lose

There is a verse in Isaiah where God says something so risky that I think most people read past it without noticing what He has done.

Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.Isaiah 49:15

He picks the strongest instance of remembering that exists in human life. A nursing mother and her own infant. That is the benchmark, and it is chosen because it is the least forgettable relationship anybody has ever known.

And then He does something that a careful speaker would not do. He concedes it. Even these may forget. He allows that the strongest human memory can fail, which is an uncomfortable sentence and is also true, and He does not soften it.

And having conceded the strongest case, He makes His claim on the other side of the concession, where it now stands entirely alone.

So take it plainly: you are remembered by the one memory that was never conceded, and that is what Isaiah 49 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line spoken to a nation that felt abandoned and lays it down beside a shoe box.

Now the box, and then the real question under it.

She wondered whom to write the names for. And the honest answer, the one she was avoiding, is: for nobody in particular. And that turns out to be all right, because the names are not preserved by the writing. They are held somewhere that does not require a pen or a nephew or a house that is not being cleared.

I am not going to tell you that somebody will one day find that box and care about it, because I do not know and Scripture does not say and I will not furnish that. What Isaiah says is smaller and much sturdier: the forgetting she is afraid of does not happen at the only level that finally matters.

You have been held in a memory that outlasts every human one, and it held before you were the last one left, because the written word concedes the best human case and then makes its claim beyond it, and His Spirit is what makes that land on a woman with a pen in a drawer.

And notice the tense He uses, because it is not a promise about later. I will not forget you is spoken to people who were, at that moment, convinced they had already been forgotten. It is a correction of a present condition rather than an assurance about a future one. Which matters at seventy one, because the fear in that room is not really about what happens after she dies. It is about whether the knowing is happening now, tonight, with a shoe box open on a low table. You are being known at this hour rather than filed for a later one, and Scripture is what puts the verb where it puts it, and His Spirit is the one who makes a present tense feel like company rather than doctrine.

What this is not, and what it does not require

Now the guardrail, and it matters enormously in this category.

Nobody is telling her to build something. There is no instruction here to make a record, start a project, write a memoir, or leave anything behind. If a woman finishes this article feeling that she now has a task, then it has added a weight to somebody who came here carrying one.

The comfort is not that her life will be preserved somewhere on earth. It is that she is known by God, now, present tense, and that this does not depend on any survival of information anywhere.

And a life that leaves nothing anybody can point at has not been wasted. That sentence needs saying plainly, because almost everything else a person hears says the opposite. There is no monument requirement in Scripture, and the crown in this book is placed on a head by somebody else and then thrown down, and nobody keeps it as a marker.

You are held by a regard that has nothing to do with what survives you, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase. You have nothing to construct and nothing to preserve, and Scripture is what settles that, and His Spirit is what keeps a comfort from turning into a project by Thursday.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.

Right now, as you read this, you are remembered, including in the part of your own life that nobody else can describe. Scripture concedes that a nursing mother might forget her child and then says I will not forget you, standing alone on the far side of that concession, and His Spirit is laying that over a shoe box while you read.

And you have nothing to preserve and nothing to build, because the crown in this book is placed on a head and never kept as a marker. God's regard for you is not the total of what survives you, and there is no total, and there does not need to be a record anywhere on earth.

So the pen can stay in the drawer or come out, whichever you like, and the box can stop being a rehearsal for something worse.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Box of faces I am the last to name, you are not a thing about to be lost. Isaiah 49 concedes that even a nursing mother might forget her own child and then says I will not forget you, standing alone past every human case. Those names are held where no pen is required.
  2. Question about what goes when I go, you have the wrong level. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, where the forgetting I am afraid of does not happen at the level that finally decides anything. I am known now, and not preserved later.
  3. Father, You know what my life has actually consisted of and not merely the facts of it. Isaiah 49:15 says You will not forget me, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. There is nothing here for me to build and nothing to preserve, so I am handing You the whole box and going to bed.
