The Field That Will Be Sold

This message is for A man standing on land four generations of his family worked, knowing it will be sold within the year and that nobody who buys it will ever know what happened in the far corner of it, needs to be remembered when there is nobody left to remember.

The sign will go up in September. He has known since March and has told four people and has not yet told his own brother, who lives abroad and will be fine about it and will say something that makes it worse without meaning to.

Four generations. His great grandfather took the bottom ninety and everything since has been added or lost around that. There is a wall on the west side that he rebuilt himself at twenty three, and there is a gate his father hung that has never once needed adjusting, which is a small and entirely private fact that he thinks about more often than a man should think about a gate.

And there is the far corner.

He is not going to tell you what happened in the far corner. It is not dramatic and it is not shameful and it is the single most important thing that has ever happened to him, and it happened when he was nineteen, alone, in about four minutes, and he has never described it to anybody including his wife, who knows something happened there and has never asked because she is not a person who asks.

Whoever buys it will farm it. They will probably farm it well. They will run the far corner the way you would run any corner, which is efficiently, and they will never know, and there is no possible mechanism by which they could, and he would not want them to.

He is sixty four and the sums do not work and the sale is right. He has checked it eleven ways and it is right.

What sits under it, and what has him awake, is not the money and not the family and not the wall he built. It is smaller and it is this: after him, there is nowhere on earth where that four minutes is recorded. Not a person, not a stone, not a mark on anything.

And he has caught himself, twice this summer, thinking about putting something in the ground there. He has not, and he will not, because he knows exactly what that would be, which is a man trying to make dirt do a job dirt cannot do.

You will have your own far corner. The thing that happened where nobody was, that is about to have no address at all.

The verse that refuses to comfort anybody

There is a sentence in Ecclesiastes that is so flat and so unconsoling that its presence in Scripture is itself the interesting thing.

There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after.Ecclesiastes 1:11

That is not softened. There is no clause afterwards that lifts it. The Preacher says it and moves on.

And I want to sit there for a moment before going anywhere else, because this is the only book in the canon that will say that out loud, and a man standing at a gate in September needs it said before he needs anything else. He is right. There is no remembrance among those who come after. Whatever else is true, that is true, and Scripture will not pretend otherwise to make anybody feel better.

Which means the fear is not morbid and the impulse to put something in the ground is not foolish. It is a correct diagnosis followed by the only remedy a person can think of, and the remedy will not work, and the Preacher would agree with him about that too.

Now: the book does not end there, and where it goes is not to a monument. It goes, eventually, to God, who is described throughout Ecclesiastes as the one constant in a world of vapor, and the whole argument closes with the fact that God brings every deed into judgment, including every secret thing.

Every secret thing. Four minutes, alone, at nineteen, in the corner of a field.

So take it plainly: you are held in a record that the Preacher never once denies, and that is what Ecclesiastes 1 and the end of the same book say in their own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes the bleakest writing in the Bible and lays it down at a gate in September.

Notice what has and has not been conceded. Human remembrance: conceded entirely. Divine knowledge of every secret thing: never conceded anywhere, and stated at the end as the settled fact the whole book has been walking toward.

You have been known in the one place the bleakest book refuses to give up, because the written word concedes the field and keeps the other thing, and His Spirit is what makes that reach a man who has been awake about four minutes that happened forty five years ago.

What he is not being told to do

Now the guardrail, and it is the whole reason this article exists.

Nobody is telling him to put something in the ground, or to write it down, or to tell his brother, or to make any kind of mark. He already knows that dirt cannot do that job and he is right and this article agrees with him.

And nobody is telling him that somebody will find out. I do not know that, and Scripture does not say it, and it would be a comfortable guess put where a hard fact belongs.

And nobody is telling him the sale is a failure. Four generations ending is not a wasted life, and land is not a scorecard, and a man who sells because the sums do not work has not lost anything with God. You are held by a regard that has nothing to do with acres, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase.

The crown in this book is placed on a head by somebody else, and then thrown down, and nobody in that scene is holding land. You have nothing to keep and nothing to mark, and Scripture is what settles that, and His Spirit is what stops an ache from becoming a project with a spade in it.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.

Right now, as you read this, you are held in the one record the bleakest book will not concede, whatever happens in September. Scripture states flatly that there is no remembrance among those who come after, refuses to soften it, and then ends by putting every secret thing before God, and His Spirit is laying that over four minutes while you read.

And you have nothing to mark and nothing to keep, because the crown in this book is placed on a head by somebody else and nobody in that scene is holding acres. God's regard for you is not the total of what your family kept, and there is no total.

So the sign can go up in September, and the far corner can be farmed efficiently by somebody who will never know, and the four minutes can stop needing an address.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Far corner of the bottom field, you are not about to become nothing. Ecclesiastes 1 says plainly there is no remembrance among those who come after and refuses to soften it, and then the written word puts every secret thing in front of God. What happened in you at nineteen is on a record I cannot lose.
  2. Impulse to put something in the ground, you were the right diagnosis and the wrong remedy. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, which concedes the field entirely and never concedes the other thing. Dirt was never going to do that job.
  3. Father, You were in the far corner for the four minutes and nobody on this earth has ever been told. Ecclesiastes 1:11 gives up on human remembrance and Your book ends by bringing every secret thing before You, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. There is nothing here for me to mark, so I am handing You the whole ninety acres and letting the sign go up.
