The letter came in October and the appointment was in November and the word was said in a small room with a box of tissues that she noticed and slightly resented.
They were straightforward with her, which she asked for and is glad about, and the shape of it is that the memory goes first and goes furthest.
She is sixty two.
She has spent a good deal of the intervening months on the practical side, because that is who she is. There are documents. There is a folder. She has had two difficult conversations with her son that went better than she expected and one with her sister that did not.
The practical side is manageable. She is good at the practical side. It has become, in a way she is aware of, a place to be busy.
What she has not been able to do anything with, and what arrives most reliably at about four in the afternoon, is not a fear of dying and is not a fear of being a burden, although both of those exist and have their own hours.
It is this. Everybody she has ever loved is held in her. Not only in her, but in her, in a particular version that exists nowhere else. Her mother's actual voice. What her son was like at four, which her son does not have and can never have. Forty years of a marriage from the inside of it.
And she is going to lose that. Not lose it the way you lose a photograph, where it is somewhere else too. Lose it the way a room loses a light.
And underneath that, and she has only let herself look at it twice, is the smaller and worse one: she will lose her own life from the inside. She will be here and not have it. And she cannot work out whether a person who cannot remember their own life still has one.
You will have your own four in the afternoon. The question about what is left of you when the holding stops being possible.
The sentence Paul puts on a foundation
There is a line in Timothy that Paul describes as an inscription, a thing cut into a foundation stone, which is worth noticing because of what that image implies about who does the holding.
But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: "The Lord knows those who are his."2 Timothy 2:19
The Lord knows those who are his. Read the direction of the verb.
It does not say his people know Him, which they do, and which is elsewhere, and which is a thing that can be interrupted by illness, by exhaustion, by a bad decade, and eventually by a brain that is not working. This sentence runs the other way, and Paul deliberately picks the direction that does not depend on the person.
And the setting matters. He puts it on a foundation, which is the part of a building that does not move, and he calls it a seal, which is a mark of ownership rather than a description of a quality.
So take it plainly: you are known by somebody in a direction that does not run through your remembering, and that is what 2 Timothy 2 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an inscription on a foundation and lays it down in a kitchen at four in the afternoon.
Which reaches the worse question, the one she has only looked at twice.
She asked whether a person who cannot remember their own life still has one. And the answer this verse gives is not encouragement; it is a relocation. Her life is not constituted by her holding of it. There is a knowing of her that is not hers, that is not degrading, and that was in place before she could remember anything at all, including at two years old, including asleep.
You have been held in a knowing that was never yours to maintain, because the written word runs the verb in the direction that does not depend on us, and His Spirit is what makes that reach a woman who is good at the practical side and has nowhere to put this.
And her mother's voice, and her son at four, and the marriage from the inside: not one of those is only in her. She is the only human location, which is a real and painful thing and I am not minimizing it. She is not the only location. You have never been the only place any of it was kept, and Scripture is what establishes that, and His Spirit is the one who makes it a fact rather than a comfort.
What she is not being told
Now the guardrail, and this one has to be careful.
Nobody is telling her that she will not lose it. She will. That is what the letter said and I am not going to soften a diagnosis from a distance, and she would not respect me if I did.
And nobody is telling her to record everything, or make a memory book, or get the stories down while she can. If she wants to do any of that it may be a good thing for her son. It is not what she came here for, and turning her remaining time into an archiving project would take the years she has and hand them to a task.
And nobody is telling her what God is producing in her through this. Nothing is being produced. This is not a curriculum. It is an illness, and this site will not repurpose it into a lesson with her at the center of it.
What is offered is the direction of a verb. You are held by a regard that does not require you to hold anything, because the written word puts the knowing on God's side and cuts it into a foundation, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase. You have nothing to preserve and nothing to become, and Scripture is what settles that, and His Spirit is what stops four in the afternoon from becoming a job.
So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.
Right now, as you read this, you are known in a direction that cannot be interrupted, whatever the letter said in October. Scripture cuts into a foundation stone that the Lord knows those who are His, and puts the verb where illness cannot reach it, and His Spirit is laying that over sixty two years while you read.
And you have nothing to hold and nothing to keep hold of, because the crown in this book is placed on a head by somebody else and nobody carries their own. God's regard for you is not the total of what you can still recall, and there is no total, and there never was one.
So the folder can stay useful, and four in the afternoon can stop being the hour with nowhere to put it, and your mother's voice can be somewhere other than only in one person.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.
- Name I am going to lose hold of, you are not the thing that keeps me. 2 Timothy 2 cuts into a foundation that the Lord knows those who are His, and it runs the verb in the direction that does not depend on me. My life is not constituted by my holding of it.
- Question at four in the afternoon, you assumed the keeping was mine. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, where the knowing was in place before I could remember anything at all. I have never been the only place any of it was kept.
- Father, You knew me at two years old and asleep and You will know me when I cannot say my own name. 2 Timothy 2:19 puts the seal on Your side, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. Nothing is being produced in me by this, so I am handing You my mother's voice and my son at four and the whole of it.
2 Timothy 2:19
