A Week With No End Date

This message is for A woman looking at a schedule of shifts that runs to the end of the year with no gap in it anywhere and no date after which any of this stops, needs to walk back into an unseen life carrying something.

It went up on the wall on a Thursday and it goes to the thirty first of December.

She stood and looked at it for longer than she meant to, which is the sort of thing that gets noticed in a room like that, so she made a joke about the printing and went and did something else.

Twelve hour shifts, four on and three off, and the three off are not three off, because two of them are recovering and one of them is everything that did not get done. Her name appears in every block. There is no gap anywhere on that sheet, and beyond the thirty first there will be another sheet, and that one will look the same.

The money is necessary. There is nothing clever available. She has run the alternatives about six times over two years and they are all worse.

She is thirty six. She is good at the job and she is not unhappy in it, which surprises people.

Here is the exact thing that got her at the wall, and it took her a week to be able to say it to herself. It is not the shifts. She can do the shifts. It is that there is no date. Not a bad date, or a distant one. There is no point anywhere on any sheet, now or in any future version of the sheet, at which this arrangement stops.

Everything she has ever endured, she has endured against a date. Exams end. Pregnancies end. The bad manager left. And she has understood, standing in front of a printed sheet, that she has been using a technique her whole life that has quietly stopped being available, and that she has no other one.

You will have your own sheet on a wall. The stretch in front of you with nothing marking the far end of it.

The phrase that does not need a date

There is a sentence of Paul's that is written by somebody in a genuinely bad and genuinely open ended situation, and the phrase at the end of it is the whole thing.

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.2 Corinthians 4:16

Day by day. Not: for a season. Not: until it lifts. Not on any schedule at all.

And notice that Paul concedes the first half completely. The outer self is wasting away. He does not soften it, does not say it will turn around, and offers no date at which the wasting stops. He is describing an open ended decline and he says so in the same sentence.

So the shape of the verse is exactly the shape of the sheet on the wall: no end marked, and something true anyway.

So take it plainly: you are inside something that is issued daily rather than measured against a finish, and that is what 2 Corinthians 4 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line written by a man with no better prospects and lays it down in front of a printed sheet.

Which reaches what actually got her, which was the discovery that her technique has expired. She has always endured against a date. And Paul is describing a mechanism that has no date in it and does not need one, because it works by issue rather than by duration.

Day by day is not a small phrase. It means the supply arrives at the same frequency as the demand. There is no requirement to be able to see the end, because you are never being asked to cover the distance to it. You are being asked to cover one day, with what was issued for one day.

You have not been asked to carry the distance to a date, because the written word matches the renewal to the day rather than to the term, and His Spirit is what makes that reach a woman who has just found out her only technique has run out.

And the first three words matter, and they are the ones she can actually use in front of a wall. We do not lose heart. Not: we do not get tired. Paul is exhausted and says so elsewhere in the same letter. Losing heart is the specific thing, and it is the thing a person does when they are measuring an open ended stretch. You have been given the one thing that open ended stretches actually take from a person, and Scripture is what names it precisely, and His Spirit is the one who makes the naming of it useful rather than merely accurate.

What this article will not tell her

Now the guardrail.

Nobody is going to tell her a date. There is not one on the sheet and there is not one in Scripture and inventing one would be exactly the comfortable lie she would spot in a second.

And nobody is going to tell her that these years are producing something in her. They are shifts. It is not a refining process and she is not in a curriculum, and the twelve hours are not a mechanism with her inside it.

And nobody is going to make the sheet smaller by pointing at something ahead. It goes to the thirty first of December and then there is another one, and she is right about that.

And the shifts are not accruing anywhere. There is no account. The crown in this book is placed on a head by somebody else and thrown down, and nobody in that scene is being paid for four on and three off.

You are held by a regard that has nothing to do with what is on the wall, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase. You have nothing ahead of you to earn, and Scripture is what settles that, and His Spirit is what keeps a schedule from becoming an installment plan.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, in whatever room you are sitting in tonight.

Right now, as you read this, you are inside something issued at the same rate it is spent, whatever the sheet says. Scripture concedes an open ended decline in the first half of the sentence and puts a day by day renewal in the second, and His Spirit is laying that over the thirty first of December while you read.

And you have nothing ahead to earn and no distance to cover, because the crown in this book is placed on a head by somebody else and there is no described prize anywhere in it. What is ahead of you is Him, tomorrow, at the same frequency as the shifts, and that is what the word actually puts there.

So the sheet can go to December, and the next one can look the same, and tomorrow can be covered by what was issued for tomorrow.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Schedule with no gap in it, you are not a wall I am walking into. 2 Corinthians 4 concedes an open ended wasting in one half of the sentence and puts a renewal day by day in the other. The supply arrives at the same frequency as the demand.
  2. Technique that has just run out on me, you were never the only one. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, which has no date in it and does not need one, because it works by issue and not by duration. I am not being asked to cover the distance to anything.
  3. Father, You are already in tomorrow's twelve hours and in the twelve after that. 2 Corinthians 4:16 renews the inner self day by day and never once against a term, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. What is ahead of me is You, so I am handing You tomorrow and not carrying December.
