Joy Set AheadPsalm 73:23

The Same Road, the Same Hour

This message is for A man merging onto the same road at the same minute of the same morning to do work nobody in his house could describe, needs to walk back into an unseen life carrying something.

Six fifteen, at the merge, and if he is more than about ninety seconds either side of it the whole thing changes and he will lose eleven minutes.

He has driven this since 2011. It is thirty four minutes on a good day and fifty on a bad one and the difference is entirely decided in the first four.

The work is genuinely hard and genuinely useful and he is genuinely good at it, and none of that is the problem.

The problem is a small thing that happened at a table in June. His daughter, who is nineteen and who loves him and who was not being unkind at all, was asked by somebody what her dad does, and she said the name of the company and then said, something with contracts, I think, and looked at him, and he said, near enough, and the conversation moved on.

Near enough. He has thought about that since June.

She is not neglectful. He has never explained it. There is no version of explaining it at a table that does not take eleven minutes and lose everybody by minute three, and he has tried, years ago, twice, and watched it happen.

So here is the actual shape of his life, which he has never said out loud in these words. He gets up at five twenty. He merges at six fifteen. He does a thing all day that requires everything he has, which nobody in his house could describe, and which he is not going to be able to make describable, and then he comes home and eats and is glad to be there and does not talk about it because there is no way in.

And tomorrow is the same. And he is not asking for it to be different, because he likes the work.

What he would like, if it were on offer, is for the merge at six fifteen to be something other than the beginning of a stretch of hours that nobody in the world is with him for.

You will have your own merge. The daily entry into hours that nobody who loves you could describe.

The word that turns a psalm around

There is a psalm that spends most of its length being honest about envy, and then has one word that turns the whole thing, and after the turn it says something that is exactly the shape of a man at a merge.

Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand.Psalm 73:23

Nevertheless. Everything before that word is a man saying the wicked are doing fine and he is not and it is not fair and he nearly slipped. It is a long complaint and it is a good one.

And then: nevertheless. Which is not a rebuttal of anything he said. He does not take any of it back. He simply names something that is also true and that was true the whole time he was complaining.

So take it plainly: you are continually with Him, which was true through everything you said before the word nevertheless, and that is what Psalm 73 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a turn in an old poem and lays it down at a merge at six fifteen.

And look at the second clause, because it is the specific thing he was asking for and did not have language for. You hold my right hand. Not: You approve of my work. Not: You will explain me to my family. Not: You have a plan for the hours. You hold my right hand, which is a physical, present, unglamorous, continuous kind of company, and it is the only clause in the verse and there is nothing else offered.

Which turns out to be what he wanted. He did not ask for the work to be understood. He asked for the hours not to be hours nobody is with him for.

You have been accompanied through the hours nobody could describe, because the written word gives a hand held rather than a situation explained, and His Spirit is what makes that reach a man at thirty four minutes on a good day.

And notice the direction of the holding, which is worth a second. He does not say I hold onto You, which is what a person under strain usually says and which puts the whole arrangement on how tightly they can grip. He says You hold my right hand. The grip is not his. You have been held rather than holding on, and Scripture is what puts the verb on that side, and His Spirit is the one who makes that difference something a man can feel on a road.

What this article will not offer

Now the guardrail, and this is where a piece like this usually goes wrong.

Nobody is going to tell him what is coming. Not recognition, not a change, not a day when his daughter understands. Scripture does not describe it, and manufacturing it would be putting a picture where the word puts nothing.

And nobody is going to tell him the hours are producing something in him. They are not a curriculum. The work is hard because it is hard.

And nobody is going to use tomorrow to make today's invisibility sound smaller. The near enough at the table in June was a real thing and this article is not going to shrink it by pointing forward.

And the years are not accruing anywhere. There is no account. The crown in this book is placed on a head by somebody else and thrown down, and nobody in that scene is being paid for commutes.

You are held by a regard that has nothing to do with whether anybody can describe your day, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase. You have nothing ahead of you to earn, and Scripture is what settles that, and His Spirit is what keeps a merge from becoming an installment.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, in whatever room you are sitting in tonight.

Right now, as you read this, you are continually with Him, whatever anybody could or could not say about your day. Scripture puts a nevertheless in front of it that takes back none of the complaint and adds something that was true the whole time, and His Spirit is laying that over a merge at six fifteen while you read.

And you have nothing ahead to earn and nothing to be told, because the crown in this book is placed on a head by somebody else and there is no described prize anywhere in it. What is ahead of you is Him holding your right hand, and that is what the psalm actually offers, and it is not less than a picture would have been.

So tomorrow can be the same road at the same minute, and the work can stay undescribable, and the hours can stop being hours nobody is with you for.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Merge at six fifteen, you are not the start of an invisible day. Psalm 73 says nevertheless I am continually with You, and it takes back none of the complaint that came before it. Those hours have never once been hours nobody was with me for.
  2. Near enough at the table in June, you were a true description and not a verdict. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, which offers a hand held rather than a situation explained. I was not asking to be understood.
  3. Father, You hold my right hand, and the grip is Yours and not mine, and it is continual. Psalm 73:23 puts the verb on Your side, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. What is ahead of me is You, so I am handing You tomorrow and setting the alarm for five twenty.
