Slide fourteen has a diagram on it that he drew in November, on a Thursday, at about eight in the evening, on the back of something else, and then rebuilt properly the following week.
The whole approach is his. Not in a vague founder-of-the-idea sense. The reframing that made the project work, the decision to split the thing in two, the eleven months of getting it to hold together, the argument in February that everybody lost patience with and that turned out to be the right argument.
Priya is presenting. She has been on the project for five months and she is good and she is a better presenter than he is by a distance and everybody in the room including him knows it.
She does not say it is her work. That is the thing that makes this a real situation rather than a simple one. She says the team, and she says we, and she is scrupulous about it, and she is also standing up and he is sitting down, and after fifty minutes of somebody saying we in front of eleven directors, a room forms a view about whose thing it is, and no lie is required for that to happen.
At the end somebody senior says, this is excellent, Priya. And she says, thank you, it has been a team effort. Which is true, and generous, and does nothing at all, because there is no version of that sentence that lands anywhere.
He is in the second row. He claps. He is not performing the clapping.
And then he goes back to his desk and answers eleven emails and does not think about it, and then at about ten past six in the car it arrives, and it is not anger. It is a very specific and unpleasant kind of unreality. Eleven months of his working life just happened in that room and did not attach to him, and he cannot point at the moment it detached, because there was no moment.
You will have your own second row. The thing you did that somehow became something that happened.
Where lifting up comes from
There is a couplet in the psalms that says something so unfashionable that people mostly quote the first half and stop.
For not from the east or from the west and not from the wilderness comes lifting up, but it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another.Psalm 75:6-7
The psalmist lists the directions. East, west, the wilderness. He is running through the places a person watches, which in a modern room means the eleven directors, the senior person who said excellent, the room's forming view.
And he says lifting up does not come from any of them.
That is not a comforting thought about how it will all come right. It is a flat claim about mechanism. Whatever else those eleven directors are doing, according to this psalm they are not the source of anybody's lifting up. They may have every appearance of it. The psalm says the appearance is not the thing.
So take it plainly: you are not standing in front of the mechanism that actually decides, and that is what Psalm 75 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes an old song about the cup in God's hand and lays it in a car at ten past six.
Now the unreality, which is the actual problem. His eleven months happened and did not attach. And that is a real description of what a room does. Rooms attach things to whoever is standing up. That is not corruption, it is just how attention works, and it will happen again next quarter.
What the psalm changes is not the room. It is the significance of the room. If lifting up comes from God rather than from any direction of the compass, then the room's attachment is not a verdict. It is a fact about a room. It is weather.
You have been assessed somewhere that no room can overwrite, because the written word takes lifting up out of every human direction and puts it in one place, and His Spirit is what makes that land on a man who cannot find the moment it detached.
And notice the specific relief in that, because it is not the relief of expecting the correction to come. There is no scene in this psalm where the room is told, and I am not going to invent one for you. The relief is stranger and it holds better: the room was never the instrument. It could not have delivered a verdict on eleven months even if it had wanted to, because it is not wired to that. A man can stop waiting for a court that was never in session. You are standing on something the whole compass could not move, and Psalm 75 is what establishes that rather than my sympathy, and His Spirit is the one who keeps it from evaporating by the next quarterly review.
Priya has not taken anything
Now the guardrail, and this article needs it more than most.
Priya did not do anything wrong. She said the team. She said we. She was scrupulous, and she is better at the front of a room, and that is a real skill and not a lesser one, and eleven directors understanding a project matters and it happened because of her.
And he is not the more faithful of the two. That sentence is not available here. There is no league table, and eleven months of building does not outrank five months of making something legible to people who fund it. A room that cannot understand a thing does not fund it, and then nobody's eleven months matter to anyone.
If this article leaves a quiet feeling of being the one who really did it, then something has gone wrong, because that is the same instrument, turned around, and it will be just as unreliable next quarter.
So: you have nothing to win in that room and nothing that anybody took, because the crown in Scripture is placed on a head and never earned, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase. You are held by a regard that did not move when somebody said excellent, and the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what stops it wearing off by Monday.
So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.
Right now, as you read this, you are held outside the room's verdict, whatever a room formed a view about on Thursday. Scripture says lifting up comes from no direction of the compass but from God, and it means that as a claim about mechanism rather than as a comfort, and His Spirit is laying that over eleven months while you read.
And you have nothing to recover and nothing to win, because the crown in this book is always placed and never earned, and the people holding one are last seen throwing it down. There is no order with you and Priya in it. His Spirit is not keeping one.
So the presentation can stop being a disappearance, and go back to being what it was, which is eleven directors finally understanding something you spent eleven months making true.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.
- Second row at the announcement, you are not eleven months going somewhere else. Psalm 75 says lifting up comes not from the east or the west or the wilderness but from God, so a room's view is weather rather than a verdict. Nothing of mine attached to anybody else.
- Unreality at ten past six, you are trying to make a room into a court. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, which takes the lifting out of every direction a person watches. The work is still the work I did.
- Father, You were at that desk in November at eight in the evening and You have not mislaid one of those months. Psalm 75:7 says You are the one who lifts up, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. I am not the one who really did it and I do not need to be, so I am handing You the whole project and being glad about Priya.
