The Hands That Will Not Remember

This message is for A hospice night nurse who holds the hands of people who will not remember it in the morning and often will not have a morning, and whose whole shift leaves no trace, needs the invisible hours counted by somebody.

Between two and five is the part of the shift that has no name.

The first half has jobs in it. Observations, medication rounds, the things that go on a chart. From about two, in a quiet week, the jobs run out, and what is left is four bays and a corridor and whatever the night decides to do.

She goes round. That is the whole of the practice and it took her about six years to understand that it was the job rather than the gap between jobs. She goes in, and if somebody is awake she sits down, and if somebody is asleep she stands for a moment and then moves on, and if somebody is frightened she takes a hand and stays.

Most of them will not remember it. Some of them are past remembering anything. And of the ones who are frightened at three in the morning and hold on hard, a proportion will not have a morning at all, which is the arithmetic of the ward and which she does not dramatize because dramatizing it would make it about her.

So the work of those three hours produces: nothing. Nothing goes on a chart. There is no box for sat with. When the handover happens at seven she says the clinical things, because the clinical things are what handover is for, and the three hours are not mentioned by anybody including her.

She has been doing nights for nine years. She likes them. That surprises people and she has stopped trying to explain it.

What she has never said out loud, to any colleague or to her husband, is the thing that arrives in the car at twenty past seven. It is not distress about the deaths. She has a place for those. It is narrower and stranger. It goes: nobody in the world knows that any of that happened. Not the families, who arrive later and are told the medical things. Not the ward, which measures other quantities. Not the patients, most of whom cannot. Three hours a night, nine years, and the entire content of it exists nowhere except inside one tired woman driving home.

You will have your own twenty past seven. The part of your work that is the actual work and has no box to go in.

Where the night stops being an obstacle

There is a passage in the long psalm about being known, and it has a couplet in it that I want to put directly against those three hours.

If I say, "Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night," even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.Psalm 139:11-12

Notice the shape of it. David is not saying God can see in the dark, as a technical capacity, the way an instrument can. He is saying something stronger and stranger: that the category does not apply. Darkness is as light with you. There is no such thing as night from where God is standing.

Which means the three hours are not a dim stretch that God has to peer into. They are as fully lit as a Tuesday afternoon. The thing she does between two and five is not happening in a place that is harder to see. It is happening in the same light as everything else.

So take it plainly: you are working in full daylight, in the part of the night that has no name, and that is what Psalm 139 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a couplet about hiding and lays it down in a corridor with four bays off it.

And there is a second thing in that passage, easy to miss. David raises the darkness as a hiding place. Surely the darkness will cover me. He is a man hoping, at least in that line, for somewhere unobserved. The answer that comes back is that there is nowhere, and the psalm plainly means it as comfort rather than as a threat, because the whole poem ends with him asking to be searched.

Which turns her twenty past seven completely round. Her problem was that nobody knows what happened. The psalm says the night was never a place where things go unknown. The record she was looking for is not missing. It was never kept in the places she was checking.

You have been fully witnessed in the hours that produce no chart, because the written word says the night is bright as the day, and His Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it in a car at twenty past seven.

Where the load is bigger than one person

I want to stop here and say something plainly, because this site will not admire anyone for absorbing what nobody should absorb alone.

Nine years of nights with that content in them is a real weight, and carrying it silently is not the same as carrying it well. Talk to a counselor who works with people who do this work, not a general one, and say the true sentences rather than the professional ones. Use whatever debrief or supervision exists and use it properly. If the ward has none, ask the doctor you trust most where people actually go.

And if the drive home has begun to go somewhere heavier than tiredness, or the thought of not being here has started to feel restful, dial or text 988 in the United States, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and talk to a person tonight.

Saying it out loud to somebody qualified is not the opposite of being strong at three in the morning. You are held exactly as much on the night you ask for help as on the night you carry it alone, because Scripture never measures our standing by our endurance, and His Spirit is what makes that true in the body rather than only in the head.

Nine years are not a total

And the guardrail, quickly.

The three hours a night are not accumulating anywhere as credit. There is no account. A crown in Scripture is placed on a head by somebody else, every single time, and in the one glimpse we get of people holding one, they take it off and throw it down.

And nobody is ranked. She is not further along than the day staff whose work goes on charts. That measurement is not in this book, and hidden work that starts scoring itself against visible work has swapped something true for something exhausting.

You have nothing to win in that corridor and nothing to prove at handover, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.

Right now, as you read this, you are fully seen in the unlit hours, including three hours a night for nine years that never once reached a chart. Scripture says the darkness is not dark to Him and that the night is bright as the day, and His Spirit is laying that over a corridor with four bays off it while you read.

And you have nothing to accumulate and nothing to prove, because the crown in this book is always placed and never earned, and the people holding one are last seen throwing it down. Nobody is keeping a total of your nights, and there does not need to be one.

So the nine years can stop being an unrecorded interior and go back to being what they are, which is a woman going round between two and five.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Corridor between two and five, you are not a shift that left nothing behind. Psalm 139 says even the darkness is not dark to Him and that the night is bright as the day, so nothing in you happened out of sight. Every hand held in you was held in full light.
  2. Voice that says nobody knows it happened, you were checking the wrong records. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, where the night was never a place where things go unobserved. What I did between two and five is known.
  3. Father, You were in that corridor for nine years of nights and You have not mislaid one of those hours. Psalm 139:12 says darkness is as light with You, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. There is nothing for me to prove at handover, so I am handing You the whole nine years and going to sleep.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
