Nothing OverlookedPsalm 63:6

The Chair That Does Not Recline

This message is for A woman on her third night in a vinyl hospital chair beside a bed, sleeping in twenty minute pieces, with a whole week gone and nothing to point at, needs the invisible hours counted by somebody.

It is vinyl and it is the color of putty and it has an arm on each side that comes exactly to the wrong height, and it does not recline, and there is a version of it in every hospital in the country.

Third night.

She has worked out that if she puts her feet on the radiator cover and her coat rolled behind her neck she can get about twenty minutes at a time. Not more. Something always happens. A machine finishes a cycle and beeps three times until somebody comes. Someone in the next bay has a bad stretch. The cart goes past at four. The lights in the corridor never actually go down, they only go from bright to slightly less bright, which she did not know before this week and will never unknow.

Her mother is asleep for most of it, which is what everybody wants and which does not make the chair any different.

Here is the accounting of the week. She has not worked. She has not been home except for two hours on Tuesday to get things. She has eaten from a machine and from a shop downstairs. Her phone has a photograph of a whiteboard on it with somebody's name and a number, because she cannot hold anything in her head any more.

And her mother is in exactly the same condition she was in on Sunday. Not worse. Not better. They are waiting for a scan, and the scan is on Monday, and there is nothing in the entire week that anybody did that changed anything.

A cousin messaged on Thursday to say she was praying and to ask whether anything had happened. And the true answer was no. Nothing has happened. Nothing at all has happened for six days, and she has been awake for most of them.

The thing that comes at about half past two on the third night is not a big thought. It is small and it is flat. It goes: what has this week been for. Not the illness, which is nobody's fault and has no purpose she is going to be handed. The week. Six days of a life, spent in a chair, producing nothing, in the presence of somebody who slept through most of it.

You will have your own vinyl chair. The stretch of time whose only content was that you were there.

The watches of the night, named as a place

There is a line in a psalm written by a man in a desert, and it says something about the night hours that I have never seen anybody improve on.

When I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night.Psalm 63:6

The watches of the night. That is a technical phrase. The night was divided into watches, because somebody had to be awake through them, and the phrase carries the sense of a shift that has to be covered. It is a work word.

And David does not treat those hours as dead time to be got through. He names them as the location of something. He is not asleep, and instead of the sleeplessness being a problem in the psalm, it is the setting for the whole verse.

That is not a technique and I am not going to hand her one. She does not need instructions for how to use the third night productively; that would be one more thing on a woman with a coat rolled behind her neck. What the verse offers is smaller and better. It says the night watch is a real place, with a name, that God is in.

So take it plainly: you are in a named place rather than in a gap between days, and that is what Psalm 63 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line written in a wilderness and lays it down on a putty colored chair at half past two.

And notice the verb. Remember. Not achieve, not resolve, not pray through. In the watches of the night the man remembers God, which is the least strenuous thing a mind can do, and it is what the psalm holds up as the content of those hours.

Which answers the half past two question sideways rather than directly. She asked what the week was for. The psalm does not supply a purpose for a night, and I am not going to invent one. What it does is give the night an occupant. The hours are not empty; there is somebody in them.

You have been in company through the hours nothing happened in, because Scripture names the watches of the night as a place where God is remembered rather than a stretch to be endured, and His Spirit is what makes that land on a woman who cannot hold anything in her head.

Where the load is bigger than one person

I want to stop and be plain, because this site will not admire anybody for absorbing what nobody should absorb alone.

Six nights in a chair is beyond what a body does well, and saying so is not a criticism of her. Ask the nurse in charge directly whether there is anywhere a relative can lie down, because in many hospitals there is and nobody offers it. Ask the doctor to say the plan out loud in plain words and write it down, because holding it in your head at four in the morning is not a reasonable expectation. Ask one person to take one night. Ask badly rather than not at all.

And if the third night has begun to go somewhere heavier than exhaustion, or the thought of not being here has started to feel like relief, dial or text 988 in the United States, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and talk to a person tonight.

Going home to sleep is not abandoning anybody. You are held exactly as much on the night you went home as on the three you stayed, because Scripture never measures our standing by what we endure, and His Spirit is what makes that true in the body rather than only in theory.

Six days are not a total

And the guardrail. The six days are not accumulating anywhere as credit, and there is no account. A crown in Scripture is placed on a head by somebody else, every time it appears, and in the one glimpse we get of people holding one, they take it off and throw it down.

Nobody is ranked. She is not further along than the cousin who messaged. That comparison does not exist in this book, and a person in a chair scoring herself against a person at home has traded something true for something exhausting.

You have nothing to win in that bay and nothing to prove to anybody who messaged, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.

Right now, as you read this, you are in a named place, including a third night in which nothing happened and nothing was achieved and nothing changed. Scripture calls it the watches of the night and puts God in them, and His Spirit is laying that over a vinyl chair while you read it.

And you have nothing to accumulate and nothing to show, because the crown in this book is always placed and never earned, and the people holding one are last seen throwing it down. Nobody is keeping a total of your nights, and there is no need for one.

So the week can stop being six days spent on nothing, and go back to being what it was, which is a woman who was there when her mother woke up at four.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Third night in the vinyl chair, you are not a week gone to nothing. Psalm 63 calls those hours the watches of the night and puts remembering God right inside them, so they were a place and not a gap. Every hour spent in you was occupied.
  2. Voice at half past two, you have no authority to call six days empty. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, where an unfurnished stretch of hours is still a room somebody was in with me. Nothing happened, and I was not nowhere.
  3. Father, You were in that bay through all three nights and You have not mislaid one of those hours. Psalm 63:6 puts You in the watches of the night, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. There is nothing for me to show and nothing to prove, so I am handing You the week and closing my eyes for twenty minutes.
