He has a folded blanket and a cushion off the couch, and he puts them down in the same place every night, which is the gap between the bed and the wall on the side where the window is.
The reason is her breathing. It changes about forty minutes before anything happens. It goes shallow and then it catches, twice, in a particular way, and if he is there for the catch he can get her up on her side and it passes, and if he is not there for it he wakes to something much worse and it takes until four to get her settled.
He worked this out himself. Nobody told him. A nurse confirmed it later and said, yes, that is a real thing, and he had already known it for five months by then.
Eleven months on that floor.
His back has opinions about it. He has stopped noticing them, mostly, which he understands is not the same as them going away. He is forty nine and he sleeps in a two hour shape now, awake and down and awake, and he has forgotten what the other kind felt like in a way that is difficult to describe to somebody who has not.
The work, when you write it down, is: listening. That is the whole of it. Ninety percent of eleven months is a man lying in the dark with his ear tuned to a rhythm, doing nothing at all.
And listening leaves nothing behind. There is no residue. You cannot photograph it. His sister, who is not unkind and who calls twice a week, once asked him what he actually does at night, and he said, mostly nothing, and it was a completely accurate answer that gave her entirely the wrong picture, and he did not correct it because there was no way to correct it that would not sound like a complaint.
So it goes in as nothing. It goes into the family record as: he lives there now, and she is doing all right at the moment.
The thing that comes for him is not resentment and it is not exhaustion, though both of those are also there. It arrives around half past three on the nights he is awake and she is fine and there is nothing to do. It is the sense that eleven months of his life have been spent in a way that leaves no trace whatsoever, and that if he adds up what has been produced, the honest total is a man on a floor.
You will have your own half past three. The work that consists of being available, which by its nature produces nothing to show for itself.
The verse where God says He does the carrying
There is a sentence in Isaiah that goes in the opposite direction to almost everything else said about old age, and it is spoken by God about Himself.
Even to your old age I am he, and to grey hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save.Isaiah 46:4
Four verbs, and every one of them is God's and none of them are ours. I have made. I will bear. I will carry. I will save. The chapter it sits in is a contrast: it opens with the idols of Babylon being loaded onto animals, carried out of the city on carts, a burden on the beasts that haul them. And God says, in effect, that is what a false god is. It has to be carried. I am not like that. I carry.
Which means the man on the floor is not the load-bearing element in that room. He is doing real work and the work matters and I am not about to spiritualize it away, but he is not the reason his mother is held. Somebody else is doing that, and has been doing it since before either of them arrived.
So take it plainly: you are inside an arrangement where the carrying was never finally yours, and that is what Isaiah 46 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line about Babylon's carts and lays it on a folded blanket between a bed and a wall.
And notice who the verse is addressed to. It is spoken to the one growing old, which is his mother, and it is also, quietly, the answer to the son, because a man who believes he is the sole load-bearing wall in a house cannot rest even when he lies down. That is why half past three is the hour it comes.
Now the trace. His fear was that listening leaves nothing. But the God described here is a God who carries, and carrying is also a thing that leaves no residue and no photograph, and it is the activity He names for Himself four times in one verse. Whatever the criterion for what counts is in this book, it is plainly not visible output.
You have been doing the same kind of work God names as His own, because the written word puts carrying at the center rather than at the margin, and His Spirit is what makes that land on a man who has forgotten what real sleep feels like.
Where the load is bigger than one person
I want to stop the article here and say something plainly, because this site will not admire anybody for carrying what one person cannot carry.
Eleven months of two hour sleep is not sustainable, and saying so is not a criticism of him. Ask the doctor directly about night care and about what is actually available, in those words, rather than waiting to be offered it. Ask about respite, which exists and which the people who most need it are reliably the last to request. If a sister calls twice a week, the sentence to say is the true one about the nights, not the accurate one that gives the wrong picture.
And if the dark hours have begun to go somewhere heavier than tiredness, or the thought of not being here has started to feel like relief, dial or text 988 in the United States, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and talk to a person tonight.
Asking is not the opposite of faithfulness. You are held exactly as much on the night somebody else takes the floor, because Scripture never measures our standing by our endurance, and His Spirit is what makes that true in the body rather than only in theory.
Eleven months are not a payment
And the guardrail, because a tired man will turn this into a transaction without noticing.
The eleven months are not accumulating anywhere. There is no total. A crown in Scripture is placed on a head by somebody else, every time it appears, and in the one glimpse we get of people holding one, they take it off and throw it down in front of the throne.
Nobody is ranked either. He is not further along than the sister who calls. That measurement does not exist in this book, and a hidden life that starts scoring itself against a visible absence has traded something true for something exhausting.
You have nothing to earn on that floor and nothing to win from anybody, because the written word puts our standing on Christ and never on our record, and His Spirit is what turns that from a doctrine into ground under a man at half past three.
So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.
Right now, as you read this, you are being carried while you carry, which is the only arrangement in which eleven months on a floor is survivable. Scripture has God saying I have made, and I will bear, and I will carry, and I will save, and His Spirit is laying that over a folded blanket while you read it.
And you have nothing to show and nothing to owe, because the crown in this book is always placed and never earned, and the people who hold one are last seen throwing it down. Nobody is keeping a total of your nights, and there is no need for one.
So the eleven months can stop being a life with no trace in it, and go back to being what they are, which is a son close enough to hear his mother's breathing change.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.
- Floor beside her bed, you are not eleven months of nothing. Isaiah 46 says God has made, and will bear, and will carry, and will save, and every one of those verbs is His. Every hour spent listening in you is held.
- Voice that calls listening nothing, you cannot read the record you are ruling on. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, where carrying leaves no photograph either and is the thing God names as His own. What I did in the dark counts.
- Father, You were between that bed and that wall for all eleven months and You have not mislaid one of those nights. Isaiah 46:4 says You will carry and will save, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. There is nothing for me to earn and nothing for me to win, so I am handing You my mother and lying down.
