The Thing That Did Not Happen

This message is for A man who swallowed the one sentence that would have finished his neighbor in front of twenty people at an community garden meeting needs to know that the best thing he did all year was seen, though nothing happened and nobody noticed.

Twenty two people in a community hall, on folding chairs that were stacked wrong so half of them are the low ones. There is a tea urn that takes forty minutes and somebody put it on at ten past. Item four on the agenda is the rain barrels, which has been item four since before the pandemic, and the woman taking minutes has written the words ongoing discussion so many times over the years that her hand does it on its own.

And then it comes round to the boundary at the top of plot nineteen, and a man stands up and says something about his neighbor that is not quite fair, and is said in front of everybody, and has a little curl of pleasure in it that everyone can hear.

The neighbor is sitting three chairs along. He has a folder on his knees, and in that folder, because he is that sort of man, is a photocopy of a letter from four years ago that would finish this in one move. Not a rumor. A letter, with a date on it, in the man's own handwriting, saying the exact opposite of what he has just said. Every person in this hut would see it. Two of them would enjoy it.

He looks at the folder. And what he does is put his hand flat on top of it, the way you would settle a dog, and say, I think we can sort that out on the ground next Saturday, and would anybody like the last of the cookies before I put them away.

And the meeting moves on. Item five. The urn finally makes its noise. Nobody writes anything down, because nothing happened.

That is the point, and it is the reason I wanted to sit you in that hut for a minute. The best thing anybody did in that room that evening was a thing that did not happen, and there is no record of it anywhere in the world, and it cost him more than any of the seventeen years he has spent digging that soil. He drove home with the folder on the passenger seat and nobody knew, including his wife, because how would you even begin to tell somebody about a sentence you did not say.

You have a folder of your own. Perhaps this year has been full of things nobody can see, and I do not just mean the work: I mean the words you swallowed, the message you deleted before you sent it, the sixth time you were patient with the same person on the same subject. None of it photographs. And somewhere underneath, quietly, sits the question this whole message is here to answer: if nobody saw it, does any of it count.

The first person to name Him named Him for this

Let me name the ache first, because it is not vanity and it should not be treated as vanity.

A person can carry an unseen year without complaining and still be worn thin by a very particular loneliness: the sense of being unwitnessed. It is not that you want the clapping. Most people who feel this would be mortified by the clapping. It is that a life nobody observes starts, after long enough, to feel like a life nobody is keeping. As though the good in it evaporates as it happens, and the total at the end of the year is somehow nothing, because nothing was written down.

I want to answer that with the oldest name for God that a human being ever gave Him, and it was given by somebody with no standing whatsoever.

Hagar is a pregnant servant girl running away into a desert from a household where she has been badly used. Nobody sent a search party. She is nowhere and she is nobody, by every measure of that world, and God finds her at a spring in the wilderness and speaks to her about her whole life. And she does something nobody in Scripture has done before: she gives God a name.

So she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, "You are a God of seeing."Genesis 16:13

Sit with who that was. Not Abraham. Not Moses. The first person in the Bible to name God is a servant girl in a wilderness with no witnesses, and the name she gives Him is the One who sees me. That is not an accident, and it is not a footnote. Being seen by God was the thing she most needed to say out loud, and the Spirit of God saw fit to put it in the book forever.

So take it, plainly, as a settled thing: you are seen, and you were seen while it was happening. Not observed as a case, not audited. Seen, by a God who does His most careful looking exactly where nobody else is looking. I am not warming you up with a nice thought; that name stands written in Genesis 16 and it has been in the text for four thousand years, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a desert spring and makes it sit next to your kitchen.

Jesus makes the same point in the other direction, and He assumes it rather than argues it. Go into your room, He says, shut the door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Matthew 6:6. Notice what He does not do. He never says and one day people will find out. There is no vindication scene, no moment where the hut is told about the folder. The secret stays secret, and it is still fully banked, because the only witness who was ever necessary was in the room the whole time.

And I will not tell you what the reward is, because He does not. Anybody who describes it to you is decorating a silence. What we are told is that He sees and He is not careless with what He sees, and that is more than enough weight for a Tuesday.

Which is worth sitting with, because it is more than it sounds. You have been handled carefully by somebody who missed nothing, and that is what the written word actually offers instead of a picture, and His Spirit is the one who makes a refusal to describe feel like honesty rather than like a door closing.

Which brings me to the thing this site exists to say first, before anything else it will ever say to you. Nothing here is earned. A crown in Scripture is never a wage; it is placed on a head by somebody else, and in the one glimpse we are given of what people do with theirs, they take them off and throw them down. Nobody is ranked here. There is no league table of hidden lives, and the man in the hut is not further ahead of the man who said the unfair thing than he was that morning.

So hear this too, and let it undo the arithmetic: you are already fully seen and fully His, and no amount of unseen faithfulness is buying that and no shortage of it is losing it. That is what the word means when it says grace, and His Spirit is the one who makes grace stop being a doctrine you agree with and start being the ground under your feet.

Now, the part that turns knowing into having. It is not a large thing that is being asked of you. Jesus once put the smallest object in a farmer's pocket beside the largest thing on the landscape and said the small one has the say. A seed against a mountain, Matthew 17:20, and the seed speaks. Not campaigns. Not proves. Speaks. So the unrecorded year in your hands does not need to be argued into significance by anybody, least of all by you. It needs a sentence said out loud over it, in front of the God who was already there.

You have the standing to say it. It belongs to you because Christ is in you, and Scripture is what hands it over rather than my encouragement, and it is His Spirit who gives an ordinary sentence its weight, not the number of people who happen to be listening.

The breakthrough

So let us settle it here, tonight, in this room.

Right now, as you read this, you are seen entirely, by name, including the parts of this year that produced nothing anybody can point at. That is not my kind opinion of your life. Scripture hands us the name a runaway girl gave God at a desert spring, and His Spirit is the one making four thousand year old words land on a person with a folder they never opened.

And nothing in your hands is a receipt. You have nothing to prove and nothing here to win, because the crown in this book is always placed, never earned, and the people who have one in the end are last seen taking it off. Genesis 16 does not describe a table with your name near the bottom of it, and His Spirit is not keeping one either, which means the year can stop being a total and go back to being a life.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so nothing here is talked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit is the one who carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide. You are not owed a scene and you are not asking for one.

  1. Room where nobody was looking, you are no empty page. Genesis 16 has a runaway girl at a desert spring call God the One who sees me, and He has never once needed a second witness. Everything I did in you is already on His page.
  2. Fear that unwitnessed means unreal, you do not decide what is true in an empty room. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, where the God who sees in secret was in the hut, the corridor and the car the entire time. What I did stands, whatever the minutes say.
  3. Father, You were there for the sentence I did not say and You have not mislaid one hour of this year. Genesis 16:13 calls You the God who sees me, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. There is nothing here for me to prove and nothing to win from anybody, so I am handing You the whole unrecorded lot of it and going to bed.
