Nine years ago his brother did something. What it was does not matter for our purposes, and it is not the interesting part. It was the kind of thing that would have changed how the whole family saw him permanently, and it happened, and it was over, and his brother came out the other side of it and has been steadily rebuilding ever since.
Two people know. His brother, and him.
Every Christmas, the family is in the same room. The mother says something about how her elder son has always been the reliable one, which is not exactly wrong now and was spectacularly wrong for about fourteen months. An aunt says something warm. Somebody makes a joke about how the younger brother could learn a thing or two, and the younger brother, who is forty three and who carried a great deal during that fourteen months, laughs along and passes the potatoes.
That is it. That is the whole event. Nine times.
He is not sitting there seething. This is what makes it worth writing about rather than merely difficult. He does not want his brother exposed. He would not trade the current situation for the one where everybody knows. He has looked at that trade honestly, more than once, usually driving home, and every time he has come down on the same side.
What sits in him instead is something quieter and harder to name. It is not resentment. It is closer to thinness. The sense of being slightly less solid in that room than he actually is. Everybody in that living room has a version of him that is missing the load-bearing part.
And there is no way to fix it that is not worse than the problem. He cannot say it. He cannot even hint at it, because a hint in a family is a fuse. He cannot mention it to his wife, who knows something happened and has never pushed, because telling her would put her in the room every Christmas holding it too.
So he passes the potatoes, and drives home, and the thing goes on being true and being unavailable.
Nine years.
Here is the question underneath, and it is not about his brother at all. It goes: does something that must never be spoken have any weight anywhere? Or is it, functionally, nothing? A thing with no witness, no record, no effect anybody can trace, and no possibility of one ever.
You will have your own. It may not be nine years and it may not be a brother. It may be a small ongoing act of not saying, or not correcting, or not defending yourself, which by its nature can never be reported and would be ruined if it were.
Where the eyes are
There is a proverb that is usually quoted as a warning, and it should not be. Read it as it is written and it is one of the most steadying sentences in the book.
The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.Proverbs 15:3
Every place. Not most places. Not the places with significance. Every place includes a living room in the second week of December with plates on knees, and it includes the passenger seat of a car at eleven at night on the way home.
And notice the second half, which is the part that gets left off. Keeping watch on the evil and the good. Both are named. The proverb is not only about being caught. It is equally, in its own words, about being seen doing right, and the writer puts the two in one sentence as though it never occurred to him that anybody would only hear the first one.
So take it flatly: you are watched over in the good you did that nobody can be told about, and you were watched over in it as it happened. That is what Proverbs 15 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line from a collection of sayings and stands it up in a family living room.
Now the thing about weight. His fear was that a thing which can never be spoken has no substance. But substance in this book has never been a function of how many people can testify. Jesus assumed exactly this when He talked about the Father who sees in secret, Matthew 6:6, and He did not add a clause about the secret eventually being made public. He let it stay secret and He still called it real.
Which means the thinness he feels in that room is a fact about the room, not a fact about him. The room has a version of him that is missing the load-bearing part. God does not. There is exactly one account of that man in existence which contains the whole thing, and it is not held by anybody at that table.
You have been carried whole somewhere, while being carried partially everywhere else, because the written word says the eyes of the Lord are in every place, and His Spirit is what makes that a comfort rather than a surveillance camera.
What the silence is not
Now, carefully, because there is a way of hearing this that would poison it.
The nine years are not purchasing anything. There is no account with fourteen months of loyalty in it accruing interest. Nothing about the potatoes makes God's regard for him higher than it was the year before it all happened.
A crown in Scripture is never a wage. It is placed on a head, always, by somebody else, and in the single glimpse we get of people holding one, they take it off and throw it down in front of the throne. That is not the conduct of anybody who thinks they have been paid.
And under no circumstances is he the more faithful brother. That sentence does not exist in this world. The moment a hidden loyalty starts quietly comparing itself with the person it is protecting, it has stopped being loyalty and started being a position, and the two feel identical from the inside for about a year.
You are held by a regard that has nothing to do with what you carried, and you were held by it before any of it happened, because Scripture puts our standing on Christ and never on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that solid rather than sentimental.
That, in fact, is what keeps a silence clean over a long stretch. A silence kept to earn something eventually wants payment, and starts leaking. You have been keeping something out of freedom rather than out of investment, and the written word is what settles that, and His Spirit is what keeps it from turning by the tenth Christmas.
So let us settle it here, in whatever room you happen to be in.
Right now, as you read this, you are seen whole, with the load-bearing part included, in a way that no table at Christmas has ever seen you. Scripture says the eyes of the Lord are in every place and that they keep watch on the good as well as the evil, and His Spirit is laying that over nine years of passing the potatoes while you read.
And you have nothing to prove at that table and nothing to win from it, because the crown in this book is always placed and never earned, and the people who hold one are last seen taking it off. There is no more faithful brother in Scripture's arithmetic. His Spirit is not doing that arithmetic either.
So the nine years can stop being an unwitnessed weight and go back to being what they are, which is a man loving his brother in a way that will never be described.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.
- Nine Christmases of saying nothing, you are not an empty stretch of years. Proverbs 15 says the eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the good as well as the evil, and they were in that living room every single time. What I did not say was seen as I did not say it.
- Thinness that comes from being half known, you have no right to tell me how solid I am. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, where one account of me exists that has the whole thing in it. I am not less real for being partially described.
- Father, You were in the room and in the car and You have not mislaid one of those nine Decembers. Proverbs 15:3 says Your eyes are in every place, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. I am not the more faithful brother and I do not want to be, so I am handing You the whole silence and going to bed.
