Six Years, No Name on the Spine

The contract was clear and she read it properly before she signed it, which is more than most people do. The work is done for hire. The name on the book will be the name of the man who commissioned it and who wrote the original, and her name appears nowhere, including not in the acknowledgments, because the arrangement was that it would not.

She was not tricked. She has said so, several times, to people who wanted to be indignant on her behalf.

Six years.

Here is what six years actually consists of. There is a word in the third chapter that carries a double sense in the source language, one of them ordinary and one of them legal, and the whole argument of a later section quietly depends on the second sense being audible. English has no word that does both. She spent, in total, somewhere near thirty hours on that one problem across four years, coming back to it, trying things, and eventually solving it with a construction two pages earlier that sets the reader up so the ordinary word lands with the legal weight when it arrives.

Nobody will ever know that happened. Not one reader. If she did it right, it is invisible; that is what doing it right means. A reader who noticed the seam would be a reader she had failed.

There are perhaps two hundred decisions of that kind in the book. There is one page she rewrote eleven times. There is a footnote she argued for and lost and put in anyway in a form he accepted without noticing it was the same point.

And when it comes out, it will be his book. Properly. He wrote it. She would not claim otherwise and does not want to.

The trouble arrives at odd moments. Not when she thinks about the cover. She has made her peace with the cover. It arrives when somebody praises the book to her, not knowing, and says something specific and admiring about a passage, and the passage is one of the two hundred, and she says, yes, it is very good, and goes home.

She is forty six. There will not be six more years like this one.

What sits underneath, and what she has never said to anybody in these words, is a question about address. Not credit. Address. Six years of extremely fine work went out of her and into a book, and the book will say it was somebody else's, and so the work has, in a strange way, no recipient. It was not for the reader, who cannot see it. It was not for the author, who did not ask for that standard. So who exactly was it for?

You will have a version. The care you took that nobody commissioned and nobody will attribute. The standard you held to that has no address on it.

Whatever you do, and who it is for

Paul writes a sentence to a group of people whose work carried no attribution at all, in a household economy where a slave's labor was legally the master's and nobody would have thought to name them.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.Colossians 3:23-24

I want to take the last four words and set the rest aside for a moment, because those four words are the answer to her question and they are usually skipped over on the way to something else.

That last clause, serving the Lord Christ, is not an instruction. It is a statement about who the work was actually addressed to, in a situation where the visible recipient was somebody else entirely.

That is precisely her problem, stated by a first century letter. She could not find the address. Paul says the address was never the one on the cover.

So take it plainly: you are working for somebody who reads every line, and you were doing that on the days you did not think about it at all. That is what Colossians 3 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line written to people whose names history did not keep and sets it down over a table full of paper.

And notice the scope Paul gives it. Whatever you do. Not the religious portion. Not the visible portion. Whatever. He is refusing to divide the work into the part that counts and the part that is only labor, which is exactly the division that makes thirty hours on one word feel like a private extravagance.

Which reframes the two hundred decisions completely. They were not unaddressed. They were addressed the whole time, to a reader who does not skim, and who is the one reader in the world capable of seeing a seam that is not there.

You have been read by somebody who notices the construction two pages earlier, and Scripture is what says so, and His Spirit is the one who turns a line about household work into something that reaches a woman at forty six with a book she cannot sign.

Not a wage, and not a compensation

Now I want to be careful with the middle of that verse, because there is a way of using it that would make everything worse.

Paul does mention an inheritance. He does not describe it, and I am not going to either, because the moment somebody starts telling you what you will be handed, they are decorating a silence with furniture of their own. And notice the word he chose: an inheritance is not a wage. An inheritance is what you get for being family, and a slave in that household could not inherit, which is the entire force of the sentence.

So this is not compensation for the missing credit. It is not the universe balancing a book. The six years are not being repaid, and reading it that way would turn a gift into a settlement.

A crown in Scripture is placed on a head by somebody else, always, and in the one glimpse we get of people who hold one, they take it off and throw it down. Nobody in that room is being reimbursed.

You are held by a regard that has nothing to do with attribution, and you were held by it before the contract was signed, because the written word puts our standing on Christ and never on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a consolation.

And there is no ranking here either. She is not further along than the man whose name is on the spine. That comparison is not available in this book, and a hidden life measuring itself against a visible one has traded something true for something exhausting. You have nothing to win here and nothing to recover, and Scripture settles that rather than my sympathy, and His Spirit keeps it from turning quietly into a grievance.
