He has started counting, which was a mistake, because now he cannot unnotice it.
Somebody says something good about him and before the sentence is fully out of their mouth there is a response already moving, and it is always one of about four things.
It was nothing. Anyone would have. Oh, well, the team did most of it. And the fourth one, the worst one, which is a small laugh and then a change of subject so smooth that most people never register it happened.
Fourteen times in one week. He counted fourteen. He is not certain he caught them all.
He is fifty three. He has been doing this since he was a boy and can point at the household it came from and could give you a fairly good account of why, and none of that has ever made the slightest difference to the reflex itself, which is faster than any of the understanding.
Here is the part that made him actually stop and think, which happened at a table in September. Somebody said something to him, and he did the fourth version, the laugh and the change of subject, and he watched the person's face do a very small thing. Nothing dramatic. A tiny closing.
And he understood, sitting there, that he had just taken something out of somebody's hands and given it back to them, and that they now had to carry it, and that this had probably happened several thousand times over the course of his life.
That is what he cannot get past. He always thought of it as a private habit, slightly awkward, essentially harmless. It is not private. Every time he does it, somebody else is left holding something they had meant to give away.
And he still cannot stop. He tried, for about ten days after that table, and what he found is that trying produces a pause and then the same four sentences arriving slightly later, and now with a visible effort in front of them, which he suspects is worse.
He is tired of it. That is the honest bottom of it. Not guilty exactly. Tired.
You will have your own count. The response that arrives before you have decided anything, that you did not choose and cannot seem to put down.
What John says when they try to make him compete
There is a moment where John the Baptist's own followers come to him upset, because Jesus is drawing bigger crowds, and they want him to say something about it.
And his answer starts with a sentence about how anything at all gets into anybody's hands.
A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.John 3:27
Cannot receive even one thing. He is making a universal claim, and he is making it about the mechanism of receiving rather than about modesty.
And notice the context, because it is doing work. He is being invited into a comparison, and he refuses it, and the way he refuses it is not by saying he is unimportant. It is by pointing out that everybody in the conversation, himself and Jesus and the crowds and the disciples asking, is on the receiving end of everything they have.
So take it plainly: you are a receiver by construction and not by choice, and that is what John 3 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a line from a man beside a river and lays it down at a table in September.
Which reframes the reflex in a way that is more useful than any amount of examining where it came from. The four sentences are all versions of one claim, which is: this did not arrive here, or it should not have. And John says receiving is not a thing a person does or declines to do. It is the only way anybody has anything. The reflex is not defending a boundary. It is denying the mechanism by which he is alive.
You have been receiving continuously whether or not you have been agreeing to it, because the written word makes it the universal condition rather than an optional posture, and His Spirit is what makes that reach a man for whom understanding has never once been enough.
And there is a kindness in where John says it from, which is worth having. He is not a man in a comfortable position handing down a principle. He is being told, by his own people, that he is being eclipsed, and this is the sentence he reaches for first. It is what he stands on while something is being taken away from him. Which means it holds under load, and a fifty three year old man tired of his own mouth is exactly the sort of load it was written to hold. You are standing on something that has already been tested under worse, and Scripture is what shows that rather than my assurance, and His Spirit is the one who makes a tested thing feel different from a true one.
Nobody is being asked to perform
Now the guardrail, and it is the important one, because he has already tried the obvious fix and it made things worse.
Nobody is telling him to say thank you correctly from now on. He tried that for ten days and produced a visible effort, and a visible effort is worse than the reflex because it puts the other person into a scene. If this article hands him a technique, it hands him something to fail at, and he is fifty three and tired.
So this is not a behavior instruction. What is on offer is a fact underneath the behavior, which he can hold whether or not his mouth changes this year or ever.
And being appreciated is not pride, and the reflex is not a sin to be confessed and repented of weekly. There is no account. A crown in Scripture is placed on a head by somebody else, every single time, and the elders receive before they cast, and neither motion is embarrassed.
You are held by a regard that has never once needed you to accept it well, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase. You have nothing to correct by Friday, and Scripture is what settles that, and His Spirit is what stops a truth becoming a program for a man who has enough of those.
So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.
Right now, as you read this, you are on the receiving end of everything, whatever came out of your mouth fourteen times last week. Scripture says a person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given from heaven, which makes receiving the universal condition rather than a skill you are bad at, and His Spirit is laying that over fifty three years while you read.
And you have nothing to defend and nothing to perform, because the crown in this book is placed on a head first and cast down second, and no one in that scene is managing the moment. God's regard for you is not the total of what you have accepted gracefully, and there is no total.
So the reflex can stay for now, and stop being the thing that decides what is true, and the count can stop.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.
- Reflex that bats it away, you are not something I chose. John 3 says a person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given from heaven, so receiving is the condition I am in and not a skill I am failing at. You are not defending anything real.
- Fourteen times in one week, you are not a verdict on me. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, which states the mechanism rather than issuing me a technique. There is nothing here for me to correct by Friday.
- Father, You were at that table in September and everything in my hands arrived from You first. John 3:27 makes me a receiver by construction, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. Being appreciated is not pride, so I am handing You the whole reflex and I am going to stop counting.
