The Card I Have Not Opened

Five weeks on the shelf in the hall, propped against a small clock, with his name on the front in handwriting he does not recognize.

He sat with that family for a month. Not every day, but most days, at the worst point of the worst thing that has ever happened to them. He did the things that get done: he drove, he made phone calls that other people could not face making, he sat in a room for two hours on a Thursday while nobody said anything, and he was there at the end.

He is not a professional. He is a neighbor with a car and a free afternoon, and he is the sort of man who cannot see something like that happening two doors down and go inside.

The daughter handed him the envelope in the street, four days after, and said, we all wrote something, and then she started to cry and hugged him and went back in the house.

He put it on the shelf.

He has walked past it, by a conservative estimate, four hundred times. He dusts around it. His wife has said nothing about it, which is a sort of communication.

He knows what is in it. Not the specific words, but the class of thing: five or six people saying, in various handwriting, what that month meant to them. It is the single most concentrated piece of gratitude he will ever be handed.

And he cannot open it.

He has tried twice. Both times he picked it up and put it back, and the second time he noticed something about how his chest felt and put it back quicker.

If you asked him he would say he does not want to be emotional about it, which is a real reason and is not the reason. The reason, as near as he can get, is that opening it would require him to be somebody who did something significant, and he does not know how to be that. He knows how to be a man with a car and a free afternoon. That is a role with a shape. The other thing has no shape and he cannot find where to stand in it.

You will have your own shelf. The gratitude sitting somewhere in your house that you cannot pick up.

The question Paul asks a room that had got proud

There is a question in Corinthians, aimed at people who were rather pleased with themselves, and it works just as precisely on a man who cannot open an envelope.

What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?1 Corinthians 4:7

Paul is dismantling boasting. And the tool he uses is not humility, it is history. He asks a question about origin, and the question is unanswerable, and that is the point: there is no item on the list that came from nowhere.

Now turn that on the shelf, because it goes the same way.

The month he gave that family was made of things he did not originate. The car. The free afternoon. The particular constitution that can sit in a room for two hours without needing to fill it, which is a temperament and which he did not choose. The fact that he happened to live two doors down.

Which does not make the month less. It makes it a different kind of thing entirely, and this is the piece he is missing: he thinks the envelope is asking him to accept a claim about himself, and it is not. It is a receipt for something that passed through him.

So take it plainly: you are the place something went through rather than the place it came from, and that is what 1 Corinthians 4 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a question about boasting and lays it down in a hallway next to a small clock.

And that is a position with a shape. That is the whole difficulty solved, or at least located. He could not find where to stand as a man who did something significant. He can stand perfectly well as a man through whom something arrived at a family in the worst month of their lives, because that is a place with a floor and a direction and somewhere to put what he is holding.

You have a place to stand that is not a claim about yourself, because the written word puts the origin outside us without emptying the account, and His Spirit is what makes that reach a man who has walked past a shelf four hundred times.

What the site will not tell him

Now the guardrail, because there is a way of using that verse that would keep the envelope shut forever.

Paul is not telling him that his month was nothing. The verse is aimed at boasting, and there is no boasting anywhere in this story; there is a sealed envelope and a man dusting around it. Applying a rebuke for pride to somebody suffering from the opposite problem is one of the commonest and most damaging misuses of Scripture there is, and this site will not do it.

He is also not being told to deflect. When he opens it, the right thing to say to that family is thank you, and not it was nothing, and not anyone would have, because anyone did not.

The elders in Revelation receive the crowns before they throw them down. Both motions. If receiving were the problem, the scene would not have the first half in it. You have permission to be genuinely thanked, and Scripture is what grants it, and His Spirit is what makes permission feel like something a man can act on rather than a technicality.

And the month is not an entry anywhere. There is no account. A crown in Scripture is placed on a head by somebody else, always. You are held by a regard that was not raised by that month, because the written word puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase.
