Given Not EarnedRomans 11:6

Useful, and Nothing Else

This message is for A woman who has quietly fused her worth to her usefulness and now cannot be in a room without earning her place in it, needs to be honored without any of it being a wage.

She noticed it in October, at a thing at a friend's house, and the noticing is the whole story.

She had arrived, and taken her coat off, and within ninety seconds she was in the kitchen carrying something. Not because she was asked. Because carrying something is what she does, and it happened before any decision was made, in the gap between the coat coming off and anybody speaking to her.

And later, sitting down for the first time at about half past eight, with nothing in her hands and nothing to do, she noticed she was uncomfortable. Physically. Wanting to get up.

She thought about it in a slow way on the way home and arrived somewhere she did not enjoy, which is this: she cannot be in a room without earning her place in it. And she has been doing that since roughly her early twenties, so consistently and so effectively that everybody who knows her would describe her as generous, and it is generosity, and it is also a payment, and both of those are true at once and she cannot separate them any more.

Here is the specific fear, and she has never said it to anybody. She thinks that if she stopped, she would find out that the affection people have for her was for the carrying. Not that they would be unkind. That there would simply be less there than she thought, and she would have to know that, and she would rather not find out.

Which means she cannot stop, and cannot rest, and has arranged twenty years so that the question is never put.

You will have your own ninety seconds. The thing you do the moment you enter a room, before a decision has been made, in order to be allowed to be there.

The sentence that will not let both be true

There is a verse in Romans that reads almost like a logician being impatient, and the impatience is the useful part.

But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.Romans 11:6

Paul is not moralizing here. He is doing something closer to arithmetic. He is saying the two categories cannot be blended, not because blending is naughty, but because the blend destroys one of the ingredients. Add any works to grace and the result is not a mixture with less grace in it. The result is not grace at all.

That is a much sharper instrument than encouragement, and it goes straight to the kitchen at ninety seconds.

Because what she has built is a blend. She believes, roughly, that she is loved and also that she should keep carrying things, and she would call the second part gratitude, and it is not gratitude, and this verse is how you can tell. Gratitude does not become uncomfortable when it sits down. Payment does.

So take it plainly: you are inside something that stops being what it is the moment it is paid for, and that is what Romans 11 says in its own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a piece of hard reasoning about Israel and lays it down in a hallway with a coat still in somebody's hand.

And here is where the verse becomes a mercy rather than an accusation. If the blend is impossible, then her twenty years of paying have not actually bought anything. Not a little. Not partially. Nothing at all. Which sounds bleak for about three seconds and is in fact the release, because it means the affection she was afraid of losing was never resting on the carrying in the first place. It could not have been. The invoice she has been paying was never received by anybody.

You have been paying an account that was never open, and it was never open on the day you started, because the written word makes the two bases mutually exclusive rather than merely different, and His Spirit is what turns that from a syllogism into something that reaches the hands.

What she is afraid to find out

Now the fear, directly, because leaving it would leave the article decorative.

She is afraid that if she stops carrying, there will be less there than she thought. And I am not going to tell her what her friends will do, because I do not know them and Scripture does not say and anybody who guesses is furnishing a silence with their own furniture.

What Scripture does settle is the other and larger question, which she has been treating as though it were the same question and it is not. Whatever is or is not true of a friend's kitchen, God's regard for her is not the total of what she has carried. A crown in this book is placed on a head by somebody else, every single time it appears, and in the one glimpse we get of people who have one, they take it off and throw it down, which is not what anybody does with something they bought.

You are held by a regard that has nothing to do with what you carried, and you were held by it in the ninety seconds before you picked anything up, because Scripture puts our standing on Christ rather than on our record, and His Spirit is what makes that a floor rather than a phrase.

And I want to be careful not to turn this into a new task. Nobody is telling her to sit down for a year and prove something. You have nothing to test and nothing to demonstrate, because the written word never asks a person to establish grace by experiment, and His Spirit is what keeps a truth from turning into an assignment.

The breakthrough

So let us settle this here, wherever you are sitting.

Right now, as you read this, you are inside grace rather than inside an arrangement, whatever your hands did in the first ninety seconds of the last party you went to. Scripture says if it is by grace it is no longer on the basis of works, and it makes the blending impossible rather than merely unwise, and His Spirit is laying that over twenty years while you read.

And you have nothing to pay and nothing that is outstanding, because the crown in this book is always placed and never earned, and the people holding one are last seen throwing it down. God's regard for you is not the total of what you have done, and there is no total.

So the carrying can stop being a payment and go back to being what it also always was, which is a genuinely kind woman who likes to help.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing or sitting, at ordinary volume. The right to speak like this is yours because Christ is in you and you were placed in Him, so none of it is worked up out of your own reserves, and Scripture is what puts the words in your mouth while His Spirit carries them. What He does with any of it is His to decide, and you are not asking for a scene.

  1. Room where nobody needs me, you are not a place I have to earn. Romans 11 says if it is by grace it is no longer on the basis of works, and that grace stops being grace the moment anything is added. There is no fee at your door and there never was.
  2. Fear of finding out there is less there, you are asking the wrong question of the wrong court. In the name of Jesus I put you under the written word, which settles what God's regard rests on and does not rest it on my hands. The account I was paying was never open.
  3. Father, You were in that hallway before my coat was off and You have not been waiting for me to carry anything. Romans 11:6 says grace and works cannot both be the basis, and Your Spirit is the one who has made that land in me tonight. There is nothing here for me to pay, so I am handing You the whole twenty years and sitting down at half past eight.
